The Green Bay Packers elevated cornerback Micah Robinson from the practice squad to the gameday roster for Week 1 of the 2025 season. The move was announced Saturday, making Robinson available for Matt LaFleur and the Packers for Sunday’s regular season opener against the Detroit Lions.

Robinson, a seventh-round pick in the 2025 NFL draft, made the initial 53-man roster but was released to make room for linebacker Nick Niemann and then immediately re-signed to the Packers practice squad. The rookie will give Jeff Hafley’s defense extra depth at cornerback with Nate Hobbs (knee) questioanble to play. What’s unclear is if Robinson’s elevation is a protection measure at cornerback or a sure sign that Hobbs, who only returned to practice this week after having surgery on his knee in early August, won’t play Sunday.

If Hobbs can’t go, the Packers will have Keisean Nixon and Carrington Valentine as starters on the perimeter with Javon Bullard likely to play in the slot. Bo Melton, Kamal Hadden and Robinson would be the backups at corner.

Surprisingly, the Packers did not elevate veteran Mecole Hardman, who could have handled returns and provided depth at receiver. LaFleur’s team listed Jayden Reed (foot), Dontayvion Wicks (calf) and Savion Williams (hamstring) as questionable to play Sunday, and Reed is listed as the team’s No. 1 punt returning option. Not elevating Hardman almost certainly suggests Reed and Wicks will play, although it’s unclear who will do the returning on Sunday. Last season, Reed handled punts while Nixon handled kicks, but Reed is still recovering from a foot injury and Nixon is the team’s No. 1 corner.

The Packers also decided against elevating linebacker Kristian Welch, suggesting Niemann is up to speed and ready to contribute across several special teams units for Rich Bisaccia on Sunday.

Each team can elevate up to two players each week, and a player can be elevated up to three times. Robinson can be elevated two more times this season.
