The Chargers‘ running game was inconsistent throughout the 2024 season. J.K. Dobbins started the season hot, but injuries caught up to him.

Gus Edwards, the team’s other acquisition at the position, struggled to get any rhythm going. After the signing of Najee Harris and the first-round selection of Omarion Hampton, Tyler Sullivan of CBS Sports is confident in Los Angeles’ ground game this season.

He cited “improved backfield” as the reason for optimism for the outlook of the 2025 Chargers. As a team, Los Angeles finished 17th in the NFL in rushing with 110.7 yards per contest last season. Now, they seemingly upgraded both options atop the depth chart at running back.

In addition, we have yet to mention the primary addition along the offensive line. Joe Hortiz signed right guard Mekhi Becton late in free agency, a massive acquisition for the running game.

Becton, a former offensive tackle, switched to right guard for the Eagles last year and was dominant. This goes without mentioning his size, as he stands at 6-foot-7 and weighs in at 363 pounds.

The product will look much more like what Jim Harbaugh wants to do, which is to dominate the game on the ground. They now have the personnel at running back to do so, along with a talented offensive line that brings plenty of size to the table.

The new duo will give Harbaugh a lot more flexibility and open up the offense. The offense was an issue at times in 2024, but the running game should help alleviate those concerns in 2025.
