The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed Pitt kicker Ben Saults to an undrafted free agent contract, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.
The Steelers hosted Sauls as a pre-draft visitor. He did not count against their thirty pre-draft visits since he played at Pitt, but while at Pitt, Sauls was one of the best kickers in the nation.
A left-booted kicker, Sauls was the Panthers’ kicker for the last four seasons, and helped lead them to two ranked finishes during his time with the program.
He set program records for longest-made kick with a 57 and 68-yarder this past season. Sauls has shown an aptitude for having an elite NFL range.
The Steelers do not have a need at kicker with Chris Boswell under contract for the foreseeable future and still playing at a high level.
Over his career, Sauls was an excellent kicker for the Panthers. He went 52 of 64 over his career with a career-long of 59 yards. Meanwhile, he was 122 of 124 over his tenure on extra points.
At the very least, Sauls will have the chance to showcase his leg in training and the preseason, which could easily earn him a job elsewhere in the NFL. Chris Boswell does not kick much during the spring and summer, so Sauls will have plenty of chances to prove himself.
