Seattle Seahawks rookie safety Nick Emmanwori suffered a high-ankle sprain in Sunday’s season-opening loss to the San Francisco 49ers and is “under consideration” for a stint on injured reserve, head coach Mike Macdonald said during his media session on Monday.
“Let’s just call it like week to week at this point,” Macdonald said. “If we make a move, it would be probably the next day or two, so we’ve gotta decide whether or not to make a move on that front.”
Bump: Seahawks’ run game too ‘predictable’ in opening loss
Emmanwori, an ultra-talented second-round draft pick, injured his ankle after bringing down 49ers star running back Christian McCaffrey for a 2-yard loss on the opening defensive series of Seattle’s 17-13 defeat. Emmanwori returned early in the second quarter to play on the coverage unit for a kickoff, but remained sidelined for the rest of the game after that.
Following the game, Macdonald told reporters that the team didn’t think it was a high-ankle sprain. But further testing indicated otherwise.
Players on injured reserve are required to miss at least four games. If Emmanwori is placed on IR this week, the earliest he could return would be for a Week 6 road matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Oct. 12.
Seattle’s next four games are at the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sept. 14, home against the New Orleans Saints on Sept. 21, at the Arizona Cardinals on Sept. 25 and home against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Oct. 5.
“It’s under consideration, yeah,” Macdonald said when asked about the possibility of an IR stint. “We’ll see here in the next few days.”
Other injury updates
• Veteran edge rusher Uchenna Nwosu is “definitely practicing” this week, Macdonald said. Nwosu has been ramping up as he works back from offseason knee surgery.
• Macdonald is “optimistic” that wide receivers Jake Bobo and Dareke Young can return to practice this week too. Bobo missed the season opener due to a concussion, while Young was sidelined with a hamstring injury.
