Teacher arrested after Gatlinburg-Pittman football game in Unicoi County

UNICOI COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT) – The Unicoi County Sheriff’s Office said that a teacher from Sevier County was arrested at a football game in Unicoi County Friday night.

Officials with the Sheriff’s Office idented 44-year-old teacher Brandon Cory Burns who was charged by officers with assault.

Officers said that Burns crossed the football field and assaulted at least two people following the football game Friday night.

A person and a player from Gatlinburg-Pittman grabbed Burns and attempted to pull him from the altercation, police said.

Officials said that officers learned during the investigation that Burns was a teacher and parent of one of the players from Gatlinburg-Pittman High School.

Tony Ogle Assistant Superintendent, Student Services for Sevier County Schools said that Brandon Burns is employed with the Sevier County Schools district.

Administrators from Gatlinburg-Pittman High School were on-site for Friday night’s game at Unicoi County and assisted officials there in maintaining order following an altercation among fans.  No students or staff members from either side were involved in the incident, and as such, no charges were levelled at any GPHS coaches or teachers.  One Gatlinburg fan, however, was charged based on the altercation.  District officials were made aware that evening that this individual, Mr. Brandon Burns, is a Sevier County Schools employee elsewhere in the district.  While Mr. Burns was not participating Friday evening in any capacity as a system employee, his actions were nevertheless cause for concern, and district administrators investigated and levied a suspension from work and ban from sporting events on Burns in a meeting on Monday.  The Sevier County School System expects good sportsmanship of all of its staff members, parents, players, and students, and we are deeply grateful for the actions of administrators in Unicoi County Schools for their swift intervention and gracious assistance in this situation.

The Unicoi County Schools said the incident started after the end of that game when the teams had shaken hands and spilled over onto the field.

School officials said no players from either team or the coaches were involved but some Gatlinburg Pittman players and coaches worked to break up the incident.

Tony Ogle with Sevier County Schools said administrators have now suspended Burns and he has also been banned from sporting events.

Unicoi County Sheriff’s Officials said that Burns was released from jail on a $2,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on September 15.
