Here’s an answer to the question of what the New Orleans Saints planned to do with their open spots on the practice squad. On Tuesday morning the Saints announced they were signing quarterbacks Jake Haener and Hunter Dekkers to their practice squad. Haener was waived from the 53-man roster over the weekend, while Dekkers was let go last week. Now they’re both back.
It’s something we should expect to repeat in the months ahead. Neither quarterback is a real threat to be claimed off of waivers or signed by another team, so the Saints can essentially sign, release, and re-sign them as needed to help process other moves. Spencer Rattler is still on top of the depth chart and starting this week’s game with the San Francisco 49ers. Tyler Shough is still running the scout team and getting coached up until it’s his turn to start a game.

While it isn’t the best opportunity for Haener and Dekkers to advance, it’s better to get to practice and be in the room learning while waiting for their chance.
