The San Francisco 49ers have waived kicker Jake Moody after he missed two field goals in the season opener, despite head coach Kyle Shanahan’s claims that he would remain on the roster.

The 49ers earned a narrow 17-13 win over the Seattle Seahawks as backup tight end Jake Tonges scored the winning touchdown late in the fourth quarter. George Kittle suffered an injury in the game, adding to San Francisco’s injury and suspension woes.

Several late roster moves were made in August, with Skyy Moore and Brian Robinson Jr. brought in to provide needed depth in the wide receiver and running back positions. However, despite not having another kicker on the active roster or practice squad, Moody has been waived.

According to NFL Network, the 49ers brought in veteran kicker Eddy Pineiro for a workout on Tuesday. As it stands, San Francisco doesn’t have a kicker heading into Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints.

Moody was selected in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft and had a promising rookie season. Moody made 21-of-25 field goal attempts in the regular season and set a new Super Bowl record with his 55-yard make against the Kansas City Chiefs. It was beaten by Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker that same game.

It was a strong start, but Moody endured a brutal 2024 season and headed into this year with a point to prove. Moody missed 10 field goal attempts last season and almost cost the 49ers in Week 1 against the Seahawks.

Moody missed two of his three field goal attempts against Seattle, with one being blocked by the Seahawks. There were two occasions in the second half where the 49ers could have kicked a field goal on fourth down, but Shanahan kept the offense out there.

The two missed kicks led to frustration on the sidelines, with 49ers players visibly annoyed. Shanahan said after the game that he was disappointed with the entire special teams unit, but said there was “no question” whether Moody would suit up in Week 2.

However, Shanahan was asked why there was “no question” and his response led to speculation. “It’s just the way you guys ask it,” Shanahan said.

“Right now, I have no question. I’m trying to finish today and then I’ll get on the plane, evaluate stuff, and go back at it.”

While the 49ers’ start was shaky, they earned a crucial divisional win over the Seahawks, and Tonges became the hero after replacing Kittle. He received a four-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Brock Purdy with 1:34 remaining to ice the game.

“I saw him throw it up. I wasn’t sure if he was throwing it away,” Tonges said when reflecting on his big moment. “I caught it and looked down at my feet to make sure I was in bounds, and I kind of looked around for some flags.

“And it was silent because we’re on the road. I think it was Russell Gage — someone was like, ‘You scored! You scored! ’Then I spiked the ball and celebrated with all my guys.

“It’s pretty awesome. Growing up 20 minutes from Levi’s, it’s just your dream come true. I wouldn’t want to play for anyone else. I love these guys. I love this locker room, and just want to keep rolling.”
