SEATTLE — As the NFL turns its page to week 2 already, the Seahawks are hoping to move past the heartbreaking loss to the 49ers while also not totally forgetting–because they need to correct what went wrong.

Here’s what Head Coach Mike Macdonald had to say about several key factors to come out of the Week 1 loss:

What about the run game? Can the offense bounce back?

We heard all offseason how the Seahawks were going to focus their efforts on the ground game, and that was the intention.

It just didn’t work how anyone hoped on Sunday.

Kenneth Walker III finished with 10 carries for 20 yards. Zach Charbonnet recorded 47 yards on 12 carries, and the longest run of the day covered just 9 yards.

..And it was from Sam Darnold.

“It seemed to me when we get it targeted and we’re all on the same page, we’re doing a lot of good stuff. When we have some indecisiveness, that’s when things got twisted a little bit, but a lot of positives. Guys were finishing plays the right way, and there’s a lot of stuff that we can build on, moving forward,” Macdonald said.

There’s absolutely merit to that, you saw holes open up and at least some success came of it especially for Charbonnet, who scored on the ground.

“I think it’s fair to say when we’re not running the ball effectively, we’re either not hitting our targets, we’re wrongly leveraged, or maybe not taking the right path. It could just be one of whatever things. It’s not like guys don’t know what to do, it’s just how to do them to a certain extent. We’ll get those things cleaned up as we go. I mean, you’re never going to play a perfect football game. That’s why the effort and physicality are so important because a lot of times, that makes up for a little lack of detail here or there. They have good players, too. They’re allowed to go make plays, and they’re allowed to game plan and do some things that you might or may not expect. And that’s why the game of football is so great. It’s just back and forth, this battle of will. So, that’s just what I’m talking about. When we’re on our stuff, and we’re rolling, I think we can be pretty dang good.”

And for all the fantasy football players wondering if there’s a committee approach?

“We’re not tallying reps as the game goes on, but a lot of it’s based on how the game’s going and what plays guys run better and things like that, but it’ll be adjustable as the season unfolds,” Macdonald said.

But it wasn’t just the run game, there’s an overall synergy that Macdonald hopes to see moving forward.

“That’s the magic, right? How do you make it come together? A lot of it’s based off what you have going into the plan, and how you feel like teams are playing you, and what you’re doing well and what you have up. Again, it’s a game-to-game thing, but those are the things that we’re looking at on how to improve and how we move forward from here.”

About that last 49ers touchown

I suspect a lot of people at your workplace, school, or wherever you spent your Monday were talking about the near- near-interception for Riq Woolen, which ended up being snatched away by Jake Tonges for the game-winning score. There were two plays where Woolen was front in center. Here’s Macdonald’s take on what went down.

“I really believe Riq was trying to attack the football. We would have all loved him to make the play. I guarantee Riq is the number one person that he wishes that he made the play, too. And he’s made plays like that. I’m thinking of the (Los Angeles) Rams game last year in the two-minute drill and the first game last year in Denver when he made the play on the over route. He’s made some tremendous plays for us. Made a great play on the red zone and on the goal line. Unfortunately, the two plays that he wants back are the ones near the end of the game. One is a technique thing, and I think the other thing is about putting yourself in a better body position where you make the play and not the other guy. But the other guy made a great play, too.”

Indeed, Woolen has proven himself as a high-end player in his four seasons with the Seahawks. And the goal line play Macdonald is referring to saved the 49ers from scoring a touchdown, which held them to a field goal attempt, which was no good.

Woolen will bounce back.

Nick Emmanwori’s status

Seahawks rookie safety Nick Emmanwori entered Sunday’s game with as much excitement surrounding him as any Seahawks rookie. He came through early with a big hit and tackle for loss on 49ers star Christian McCaffrey.

Unfortunately, he had to leave the game after that play with an ankle injury, one that could cause him to miss action.

“It is a high ankle for Nick. Let’s call it week-to-week at this point. If we make a move, it would be in the next day or two, because we have to decide whether or not to make a move on that front,” Macdonald said, adding a stint on the injured reserve list, which would require a 4-game absence from Emmanwori is on the table.

“That’s under consideration. We’ll see here in the next few days.”

The Seahawks hit the road to battle the Pittsburgh Steelers in a reunion with their former wideout DK Metcalf at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
