WASHINGTON (7NEWS) — This weekend, there is a major milestone in American sports —25 years of grit, glory, and groundbreaking history. The Women’s Football Alliance is expected to celebrate a quarter-century of hard-hitting action, and leading that charge: the D.C. Divas.

Founded in 2001, the D.C. Divas have become one of the most dominant teams in women’s tackle football. With multiple national championships under their belt and a fierce reputation on the field, they’re not just playing the game, they’re redefining it.

“We are talented and because we don’t need millions to do it, we do it because we love the sport, we love the person beside us, and because we want to show everyone just how talented we are, and just how amazing women and sports are,” said Yasmin Cazreau, the left tackle for the D.C. Divas.

The local team has won the national championship three times, in 2006, 2015, and 2016. They have also won 13 division titles in the NWFA. The league itself has grown into the largest and most competitive women’s football league in the world, featuring teams in over 60 U.S. cities and leagues in eight countries worldwide. With games now broadcasting on ESPN, proving that passion, talent, and tenacity know no gender.

“We don’t take for granted that we play this game for the love of the game. So every piece of us out there on that field is because we want to be there, not because we are getting million-dollar paychecks,” said Lois Cook, a wide receiver and mother of two who has been in the league for over 20 years.

From sold-out stadiums to rising youth leagues for girls, the impact is undeniable. The D.C. Divas and the WFA have built a legacy not just on touchdowns, but on trailblazing change.
