NC State started its season with a 24-17 home win over East Carolina, then picked up their first ACC game with another home win, this time a 35-31 decision over Virginia. The Wolfpack found themselves trailing 24-14 at halftime, but they would go on to outscore Virginia 21-7 in the third quarter to take what would turn out to be the final lead change of the game. The Wolfpack ran for 216 yards and four touchdowns as a team, including Daylan Smothers’ 17 attempts for 140 yards and two scores.

After an uninspiring 10-9 win over Kennesaw State, Wake Forest bounced back in a big way, trouncing Western Carolina 42-10. The Demon Deacons scored three touchdowns in the span of 3:10 in the first quarter, highlighted by Demond Claiborne’s 33 and 27-yard touchdown runs. Claiborne finished the game with 10 rushes for 193 yards and three touchdowns, with Wake Forest running for 273 as a team.
