FRISCO — Cowboys offensive coordinator Klayton Adams said during a Thursday news conference that he wants more from the running game.
“I would say there were moments where we kinda looked like we knew what we were doing,” he said. “There’s some moments where we’d like to build on what was happening and then ultimately when we needed to run the ball to win the game, we couldn’t do that, and that was pretty disappointing at the end.”

There was also a 49-yard run by backup Miles Sanders, prompting Adams to praise a downfield block by right tackle Terence Steele during the play.

The advanced stats of the run game offered positives. The team’s success percentage was 59.1 %, second-highest after Week 1, and team rushing yards over expected was plus-40, sixth-best.
Adams has high standards for his group. There was a third-quarter fumble by Sanders at the Eagles’ 10 in the third quarter and two runs of 10-plus yards, a number the Cowboys would like to see increase.
“From a teaching perspective, there’s a ton of great stuff on tape, where you go all right, we need to make sure this doesn’t happen again or we can build off what happened here,” he said. “In regards to the guys knowing what they’re supposed to do, I was pleased with that, but we just need to execute a little bit better.”
The season opener was also the debut of rookie right guard Tyler Booker. It was also an opportunity to see left tackle Tyler Guyton showcase his skills after missing a majority of training camp with a fractured bone and sprained ligament in his knee.
“I was encouraged by it,” Adams said. “I think it’s one of those situations, you look at and you go all right, I see flashes of what we want to be when we grow up. We’re a long way from where we want to be.”
