A former Marshall High School football player, now playing in the NFL, is hoping for a better performance this week after a rough start last week. Yahya Black, a defensive end for the Pittsburgh Steelers, is hoping to bounce back after not making much of an impact against the Jets in Week 1.

From Marshall, MN, To Iowa City, To The NFL

Yahya Black played his high school football in Southwestern Minnesota at Marshall High School. Marshall has turned out NFL talent before with Quarterback Trey Lance, drafted 3rd overall in the 2021 draft by San Francisco.

Black went from Marshall to Iowa City, where he played college football for the Iowa Hawkeyes, before being drafted this year in the 5th round by the Pittsburgh Steelers.

No High School Football Traditions?

Black recently had a conversation with a Steelers media personality, and they were asking him questions about his prep football career, and if you weren’t from here, you’d think how lame.

When he was asked if he had any favorite high school football traditions, Black paused and then stated they really didn’t have any, but did add that after practice, they ran to the corn field and back.

Growing up here, my high school used to let students tailgate before the home games, friends would pack into our cars, and we’d be at every road game sitting in the opposing bleachers hollering all game long.

Players would always have a big pasta feed earlier in the week that the parents and coaches would plan. There had to have been something like this in Marshall, right?

Steelers Defensive Coordinator Looking For More From Black This Week

According to an online Steelers blog page, the Defensive Coordinator this week spoke to reporters and offered up that he “expects Yahya Black to take on a bigger role this week against the Seahawks.”

A Fun Minnesota Wrinkle For Week 4

Week 4 sees the Vikings visiting the Steelers for a game in Ireland, and I’ll be interested to know if the broadcasters bring up Black and his being a fan of Jared Allen and the Vikings growing up.

Game time for week 4 in Ireland is set for 8:30 AM.

Beautiful Photos From Clemens Gardens

This weekend was a great one to get out and do something fun. I wanted to destress, so I drove over to Clemens Gardens for a nice stroll through the gardens. What a beautiful place it is. There are flowers everywhere, as well as fountains and statues. These photos only capture part of what’s available to see, but in case you haven’t had a chance to visit, now is a great time to view them, as everything is in full bloom. Take a look at some beautiful photos and then make a plan to take your own trip. All of your senses will thank you.
