The San Francisco 49ers find themselves in a challenging spot entering Week 2. Starting quarterback Brock Purdy has been ruled out with shoulder and toe injuries, leaving Mac Jones to make his first start with the team against the New Orleans Saints. Behind him, Adrian Martinez will serve as the backup. Head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed he would be elevated from the practice squad this weekend.
The 49ers explored options to add another quarterback for depth, working out veteran Mike White earlier in the week. The idea was to bring in a player who could serve as the emergency quarterback, ready to jump in should Jones and Martinez become unavailable during Sunday’s game. However, the team ultimately couldn’t make the move work due to roster constraints.
“We definitely had to be prepared for it,” Shanahan explained. “You’d love to have some more guys up. You’d love to have three guys on the roster so you could have an emergency guy like that. But we couldn’t do that, just with our 53 and stuff, so we’re just doing our due diligence and making sure people are ready.
“He’s got some history with people in our building, and some similar offenses, and he was out there and available.”
With no outside additions, the 49ers will roll into Sunday with just Jones and Martinez at quarterback. Shanahan expressed confidence that Martinez could step in if needed.
“I mean, he’s been good these two weeks, learning both these game plans,” Shanahan said. “This week, he got the most reps that he’s got, at least with the scout team. We’re working on everything with him after practice, but we’d have to see him in the game.
“I’m comfortable with him going in and executing. I’ve really liked him here these first two weeks. If it comes to that, we’ll be ready to go, though.”
The San Francisco 49ers have officially announced the signing of kicker Eddy Piñeiro to a one-year deal. ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported the news on Tuesday. Piñeiro replaces Jake Moody, who was waived this week.
