The NFL saw the ratings from last Sunday night’s combined 81-point shootout and decided to script more offense in Week 2.
Nine teams have scored 30-plus points so far this week, and 16 have scored at least 26. Offense alone can win you games in September, but defense will win you championships.
Here is where the 49ers sit heading into the “Monday Night Football” doubleheader after their 26-21 road win over the New Orleans Saints on Sunday at Caesars Superdome:
32. Tennessee Titans (Last week: 31)
Record: 0-2
Cam Ward hasn’t looked terrible, but he hasn’t looked great through two weeks. He did, however, show a flash of what he can do with his arm on his first NFL touchdown.
31. Carolina Panthers (Last week: 30)
Record: 0-2
Yeah, it’s looking like the tank is on. Tetairoa McMillan appears to be the one and only building block.
30. New Orleans Saints (Last week: 32)
Record: 0-2
For as low as I am on Spencer Rattler, he looked solid today. He game-managed New Orleans to a near-upset over San Francisco.
29. Cleveland Browns (Last week: 29)
Record: 0-2
This season needs to be it for Joe Flacco. He’s a very tough watch these days, and it very soon might be Dillon Gabriel time after the rookie’s brief cameo on Sunday.
28. Miami Dolphins (Last week: 26)
Record: 0-2
Miami’s defense is so bad that Tua Tagovailoa has no choice but to air it out on every drive. Not sure that’s a recipe for success. Their record confirms it’s not.
27. New York Jets (Last week: 24)
Record: 0-2
I can’t believe I’m saying this, but with no Justin Fields, the Jets’ offense is cooked. It still might be cooked with him at times, but at least he adds a unique element.
26. New York Giants (Last week: 28)
Record: 0-2
Poor Russell Wilson had one of the greatest games of his Pro Football Hall of Fame career, but it went to waste. At least Malik Nabers was well-fed.
25. Chicago Bears (Last week: 21)
Record: 0-2
Chicago nailed one of their two 2024 first-round draft picks, and I’m not talking about Caleb Williams. Rome Odunze’s breakout is here.
24. New England Patriots (Last week: 27)
Record: 1-1
Drake Maye played very well, but against a nonexistent Dolphins defense, so would my grandmother. It doesn’t appear there is any urgency to give the backfield reins to TreVeyon Henderson.
23. Jacksonville Jaguars (Last week: 23)
Record: 1-1
Trevor Lawrence continues to be just … meh. A wasted opportunity for Jacksonville after the Joe Burrow injury.
22. Las Vegas Raiders (Last week: 22)
Record: 1-0 (Monday Night Football)
Geno Smith is a good quarterback. Brock Bowers is a great tight end. Jakobi Meyers is a good receiver. Ashton Jeanty? The jury’s still out. For now.
21. Cincinnati Bengals (Last week: 15)
Record: 2-0
The Burrow turf toe injury could be devastating, and will sideline him months if he has surgery. If so, you can kiss their season goodbye. Jake Browning won’t be able to keep them afloat enough to make the playoffs.
20. Arizona Cardinals (Last week: 20)
Record: 2-0
Arizona, with matchups against the Saints and Panthers to open the season, have not been tested in the slightest. After a close call against New Orleans last week, they let another terrible team climb back into the game. This is a fraudulent 2-0.
19. Indianapolis Colts (Last week: 25)
Record: 2-0
Guys, Daniel Jones might be decent again. I can’t believe I’m actually writing that, but he’s looked solid through two weeks. It helps when you have a good offensive line and Jonathan Taylor collecting 215 all-purpose yards. They made a loud statement against an elite Denver defense.
18. Dallas Cowboys (Last week: 18)
Record: 1-1
Dak Prescott threw the ball 52 times in an overtime win, and that might not be far off from his per-game average this season with this atrocious defense.
17. Minnesota Vikings (Last week: 14)
Record: 1-1
J.J. McCarthy’s defense gave him opportunity after opportunity after opportunity. These are the growing pains everyone warned about. No second-half magic this week.
16. Houston Texans (Last week: 17)
Record: 0-1 (Monday Night Football)
OK, so C.J. Stroud’s sophomore slump might not have been a fluke. It’s increasingly frustrating given how talented he is, but at some point you just have to wonder …
15. Atlanta Falcons (Last week: 19)
Record: 1-1
Bijan Robinson is such a special, special talent. The type of player that can put the entire offense on his back if he needs to. He needed to on Sunday night. Atlanta’s defense also deserves its flowers.
14. Pittsburgh Steelers (Last week: 10)
Record: 1-1
Packers Aaron Rodgers showed up in Week 1. Jets Aaron Rodgers showed up in Week 2. Pittsburgh’s defense has surrendered 32.5 points and 394.5 yards per game through two weeks. Cause for concern.
13. Seattle Seahawks (Last week: 16)
Record: 1-1
Sam Darnold’s feeling more comfortable in his new offense, but still made a couple of boneheaded mistakes. Kenneth Walker ran wild over a very good Steelers’ defense.
12. San Francisco 49ers (Last week: 12)
Record: 2-0
They beat a bad football team to remain undefeated. Even without Brock Purdy and George Kittle, there still is a ton of talent on both sides of the ball. Mac Jones, all things considered, was fantastic, but this win doesn’t quite move the needle.
11. Washington Commanders (Last week: 8)
Record: 1-1
I saw someone online say Jacory Croskey-Merritt is the first industry plant football player, and they might be right. The run game was abysmal, but they faced off against perhaps the NFL’s best defense. The Austin Ekeler injury is a brutal blow for a beloved player.
10. Los Angeles Rams (Last week: 13)
Record: 2-0
If healthy, the Puka Nacua–Davante Adams tandem will do wonders for Matthew Stafford this season. This is a very good offense, and the defense is stout. They’re looking like the best team in the West through two weeks.
9. Kansas City Chiefs (Last week: 6)
Record: 0-2
There are a lot of teams, and a lot of fans, that have waited patiently for Kansas City’s downfall. I’m not saying it’s here, but when it comes, it will look a lot like it did today. The offense will be the first to go. Has it already?
8. Denver Broncos (Last week: 9)
Record: 1-1
Bo Nix was great before a costly fourth-quarter interception. The bigger concern was the defense, who got torn to shreds by Danny Dimes and Co.
7. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Last week: 11)
Record: 1-0 (Monday Night Football)
What an NFL debut for Emeka Egbuka. The offense overall was clunky, but they squeaked it out at the end.
6. Los Angeles Chargers (Last week: 5)
Record: 1-0 (Monday Night Football)
Statement win under the lights in Week 1. First victory over Kansas City in four years. Justin Herbert has some weapons and once again is one of the league’s most complete, lethal quarterbacks. Very dangerous squad here.
5. Detroit Lions (Last week: 7)
Record: 1-1
Alright, so the concerns about Detroit’s offense might have been premature. They whooped up on a decent Bears defense and looked like their explosive selves.
4. Baltimore Ravens (Last week: 3)
Record: 1-1
Lamar Jackson and Baltimore’s offense either will gash and utterly humiliate you on the ground, or they will surgically dismantle you through the air. Today, against Cleveland, it was the latter.
3. Green Bay Packers (Last week: 4)
Record: 2-0
The defense is lethal. The offense, while banged up, still has a plethora of weapons, including Tucker Kraft, who looks like a young Kittle.
2. Philadelphia Eagles (Last week: 2)
Record: 2-0
The champs were abysmal on offense and still beat the Chiefs? Either the defense is that good, Kansas City’s offense has fallen off that much, or it’s a combination of both. The last seems the most likely.
1. Buffalo Bills (Last week: 1)
Record: 2-0
Josh Allen got his face smashed in and momentarily looked like a vampire from “Sinners.” Luckily for Buffalo, James Cook did all the heavy lifting from there.
