The Panthers also moved on from outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney on Thursday. Rookies Nic Scourton and Princely Umanmielen arrived this week for rookie minicamp. They join a group that includes D.J. Wonnum, who was brought in during free agency last season, and Patrick Jones II, signed in free agency this spring.
Asked on Friday about moving on from Clowney, coach Dave Canales referenced the two rookie edge rushers and their opportunity.
“I really appreciate JD,” Canales said. “I mean, certainly when you watch the 2024 film, you know, a guy that just gave us everything that he had on the field and so we really appreciate that. And there was a lot of things from a general cap standpoint and things going forward, and about opportunity.
“We’re developmentally minded and we understand—we bring two outside linebackers, two edge rushers in, and all those reps are valuable, you know. We felt like this is a time to just make sure that those guys are getting the volume of the reps and the learning that’s going on.”
