The Tennessee Titans (0-2) hosted the Los Angeles Rams (2-0) at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee, during the early slate of games on Sunday. The Titans fell to 2-0 in a 33-19 loss in their home opener.
The Titans struggled early, committing seven penalties in the first half. But, even amidst the penalties, Cam Ward recorded the first passing touchdown of his career in the second quarter on a desperate, cross-field pass to rookie wide receiver Elic Ayomanor. The Titans took a 13-10 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The second half was a very different story. Similar to last season, the Titans faltered and fell on their faces in the second half. The defense, exhausted from being on the field so much, could not stop the Rams’ offense. And the Titans’ offense struggled to move the ball down the field.
Let’s take a look at some studs and duds from the Titans’ home opener.
Stud: WR Elic Ayomanor
Ayomanor caught his first career touchdown pass against the Rams on Sunday, on Cam Ward’s first NFL career touchdown pass. Rookie-to-rookie career-firsts. Plus, Ayomanor caught four passes on six targets for 56 yards, which is a far cry from his two catches on seven targets for 13 yards last week. He averaged 14 yards per reception against the Rams and looked much more comfortable on an NFL field in the Titans’ home opener.
Dud: RT Dan Moore Jr.
Moore’s inability to block and protect Cam Ward resulted in one penalty and at least two sacks on the rookie quarterback. It also saw Brian Callahan mess with the offensive line, putting John Ojukwu and Blake Hance on the field in his place. Together, they combined for three more penalties and at least one more sack on Ward. The offensive line as a whole was terrible against the Rams, but Moore is supposed to be a veteran leader along the line, and today’s performance was not good.
Stud: RB Tony Pollard
Pollard was in consideration for Player of the Game this week. He recorded 20 carries for 92 yards and looked angry on the field. Especially after the ridiculous illegal blocking call on Cedric Gray, Pollard came onto the field on a mission. He may not have gotten a touchdown, but he’s a huge part of why the Titans managed to score 19 points in today’s loss.
Dud: LB Arden Key
Key recorded one whole tackle on the day. The linebacker is typically one we see all over the defensive side of the ball, disrupting plays and making a difference. Today, he was notably absent, and it really hurt the defense.
Stud: K Joey Slye
Slye is the only reason the Titans scored points against the Denver Broncos in Week 1, and aside from one touchdown, he’s responsible for 13 of the Titans’ 19 points today. He went 4-for-4 on field goals and made the sole extra point he attempted. On top of that, his kickoff game was on point today.
Dud: DE Jeffery Simmons
Simmons recorded just two tackles (one solo) and two quarterback hits on Sunday. Hardly the production we are used to seeing from the star defensive end. He was involved in every snap he took, but the Rams’ offensive line effectively shut him down, limiting his impact. He has to find a way to adjust when this happens.
