The Kansas City Chiefs have made their next selection!
The Chiefs took SMU running back Brashard Smith in the seventh round. We have insta-grades from the three members of the Arrowhead Pride Draft Team.
Caleb: One of the biggest questions heading into day three of the draft was if the Chiefs would be able to find a running back, and they answered the question by trading up for Smith.
For nearly three seasons, the Chiefs have had very little explosion out of the backfield, and the addition of Smith should help with that. He may not be an every-down back at any point during his career, but his speed and explosion will give the Chiefs big-play capabilities out of the backfield. Smith also provides a background as a wide receiver from his days at Miami, so there should be plenty of chances for Andy Reid to draw up plays for him out of the backfield, and even in the slot.
The Chiefs needed to make this pick, and they might just have found a new weapon out of the backfield.
Grade: A
Nate: I like this pick a lot. Smith is an explosive runner who can get in open space and create big plays. He can make guys miss in space and has the burners the Chiefs haven’t had in years. His size limits him, but the Chiefs desperately needed some juice. I wish the Chiefs had invested more into the position, but in a vacuum, I think Smith can help immediately. In round 7, that’s a clear win. I see some Jerick McKinnon in Smith.
Grade: A
Jared: The Chiefs curiously passed on running back throughout the draft before trading up one final time to select Smith. Smith is never going to be a bell cow, an undisputed starting back in the NFL. The converted wideout is very raw as a running back, but he has a good chance to help the Chiefs out as a runner, a receiver, and in the return game. The Chiefs still have major questions about who their starting running back will be past 2025, but I expect Smith to make the team and for Andy Reid to find some ways to scheme him into space. I wouldn’t have questioned taking Smith in the fifth round. Even with a very minor trade-up, getting him this late is great value.
Grade: A
