INDIANAPOLIS — Two of the most important Colts defenders are still dealing with injuries as the team begins its week of preparation for the Titans.

Veteran cornerback Charvarius Ward remains in the concussion protocol, but he will practice on Wednesday, a sign that he’s in the final stages of the protocol.

Under the NFL’s concussion protocol, Ward must pass five steps — symptom-limited activity, aerobic exercise, football-specific exercise, non-contact practice and full-contact practice — before returning to play.

It is possible for a player to experience a setback and revert back to an earlier stage of the protocol.

Edge rusher Laiatu Latu is the other key defender Indianapolis is monitoring this week. The Colts did not record a sack or a quarterback hit against the Broncos with Latu out of the lineup, and Indianapolis now goes up against a Tennessee team that has allowed 11 sacks in the first two games.

Latu suffered a hamstring injury in last Wednesday’s practice.

“We’ll see how the week goes,” Steichen said. “We’ll work him out today and see how it goes.”
