METAIRIE, La. (Louisiana First) — When the New Orleans Saints take the field Sunday in Seattle, they’ll see several familiar faces on the opposite sideline.
Former Saints offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak is in his first year with Seattle and has brought several Saints staffers with him to his new offensive staff.
Crossovers like this aren’t uncommon in the NFL.
“There’s always these overlaps,” Saints head coach Kellen Moore said. “I mean, (Brendan) Nugent was up there with Mike (Macdonald) last year. He coached up in Seattle, and certainly, the defense guys’ experience with Klint down here. They’ve done a nice job. Always thought the world of Klint. Thought he’s done just an awesome job of where he’s been. He’s handled some challenging situations and done really well in those circumstances. They’re doing a really good job right now.”
Although Kubiak spent just one season in New Orleans, the Saints spent every day learning the ins and outs of his offensive system, knowing what they have to take away on Sunday.
“I don’t necessarily know our defensive game plan going into the week,” Saints center Erik McCoy said. “But I knew the offense and I know it well and honestly, it all starts with taking away the run game and then taking away the shot plays, the nakeds, the boots that come off of it.”
“A lot of big personnel, a lot of play action across the middle of the field, deep crossers throws,” Saints quarterback Spencer Rattler said. “He’s got a good system. I like Klint a lot, and he’s going to give us a challenge. I know defensively we’ll dial it in and play hard against him.”
Saints defensive end Chase Yong once again missed practice on Wednesday with a calf injury that has sidelined him for the first two games. Meanwhile, left guard Trevor Penning returned to practice for the first time in several weeks with a toe injury. He was limited on Wednesday.
Also, right tackle Taliese Fuaga (knee/back) and backup left guard Dillon Radunz (toe) did not practice on Wednesday.
