Backup 49ers quarterback Mac Jones is approaching Week 3’s home opener at Levi’s Stadium against the Arizona Cardinals as usual, even though Brock Purdy’s availability being up in the air.
Jones, who flourished in place of Purdy (turf toe) in Week 2 against the New Orleans Saints at Caesars Superdome, discussed what it’s like to prepare for a game with an unknown role with reporters at 49ers practice on Thursday.
“I mean, as a backup, you know you’re not playing the first snap; and as a starter, you are,” Jones said in Santa Clara. “You got to be ready for both. At the end of the day, all the externals don’t really matter. You just have to focus on the game plan and getting everything tidied up by Sunday.
“And that’s what I’m doing, just like a normal week for me and following my schedule, being ready to play if my number’s called.”
The 27-year-old Jones threw 26-for-39 with 279 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions in the 49ers’ 26-21 Week 2 win over the Saints.
Then, Jones knew he was starting ahead of time. This time isn’t as clear-cut. Regardless, the No. 15 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft is focused on the Cardinals, even sharing his respect for the franchise and its scheme.
“I played against them a few years ago,” Jones said. “It’s a new scheme [with] some similar players. But they do a great job of disguising coverage and got a lot of great players on the backend. Obviously, their defensive line is explosive.
“Been very impressed with them on film this year, and obviously last year. They got playmakers; they try to confuse the quarterback; and they do a good job of that.”
Jones has faced Arizona once before — during the 2022 season. He finished 24-for-35 with 235 yards and an interception.
The decision on whether Jones will start is still to be determined, likely depending on Purdy and San Francisco’s training staff.
Nevertheless, Jones is preparing as he would in any other week and has a good understanding of the Cardinals’ defense.
