Arizona Cardinals linebacker Xavier Thomas has not been shy about his frustrations with the Clemson Tigers this season.

After Clemson — his alma mater — lost its Week 1 matchup at home to No. 9 Louisiana State, he took to X (formerly Twitter) to vent:

The Tigers’ performance has not improved, as they fell to 1-3 on Saturday, Sept. 20, after their second straight loss. After this defeat, coming at the hands of unranked Syracuse, Thomas was not even surprised:

“At this point, it’s not even an upset anymore,” Thomas posted on X, after Clemson’s loss.

Thomas played for Clemson from 2018 to 2023. They were ranked in the top 20 every season and won the ACC four times. Three of those ACC Champion teams made the College Football Playoff.

Thomas grew accustomed to that standard, especially considering two of his Clemson teams appeared in College Football Playoff National Championships. One of those two teams even won the College Football Playoff National Championship. He voiced his frustration with the team not meeting that standard after their 1-3 start:

“Not once would I ever & have ever spoke down on Dabo,” Thomas posted on X. “But, the Standard will always be the Standard, & it’s not being upheld.”

Thomas was responding to an X user who had replied to Thomas: “Ex players need to stay Classy. Clemson and Dabo were very good to you!”

Thomas is not interested in playing the blame game, which is likely a relief for head coach Dabo Swinney. After Clemson dropped to 1-2, Swinney defended his team relentlessly during a viral rant that lasted approximately seven straight minutes at a press conference. Perhaps the top highlight was when Swinney said:

“If they tired of winning, they can send me on their way because that’s all we’ve done is win,” Swinney said on Sept. 16. “We’ve won this league eight out of the last 10 years. Is that not good? I’m just asking, is that good? I don’t know if that’s good or not. To go to the playoffs seven out of 10 years, be in four national championships, win it twice?

“I mean, if Clemson’s tired of winning, they can send me on my way, but I’m gonna go somewhere else and coach. I ain’t going to the beach. Hell, I’m 55. I got a long way to go. Y’all gonna have to deal with me for a while. … I’m just getting going. I’m just now good enough to be a head coach. I’m just now figuring it out. So, we’ll be around a while.”

Two seasons ago, Clemson won fewer than 10 games for the first time since 2010 (Swinney’s second full season as Clemson head coach). Last season, they won 10, including the ACC Championship, and made the College Football Playoff. The Tigers will now have to win out to have a chance at replicating 2024’s level of success.
