It’s been a whirlwind couple of weeks for Evergreen High School. The community continues to heal after a tragic shooting at the school on Sept. 10, and the Denver Broncos stepped up last week to offer a unique experience for flag and tackle football players.

The Broncos hosted both Evergreen football teams for practice at the organization’s indoor field in Englewood on Sept. 16 while the high school and its facilities were closed.

With no home base for athletics in the aftermath, the Cougars have called some audibles to keep practices going, with some help from their Jeffco rivals. The Cougars practiced at Chatfield High School before the Broncos reached out.

Ryan Jenson is the Cougars’ assistant coach for tackle football. He’s also a Fort Morgan High School and CSU Pueblo alum and nine-year NFL veteran, playing six seasons for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and winning a Super Bowl with Tom Brady in 2021. He retired from the NFL in 2024 and joined Evegreen’s staff in 2025.

Jenson helped pull some strings, and with some collaboration with current Broncos offensive lineman Quinn Meinerz, the team offered its all-world indoor facilities for the Cougars’ flag and tackle football teams to practice.

Broncos General Manager George Paton took time to speak to the students to show support and give some football insight.

The neighboring communities also have rallied behind Evergreen in recent weeks, with a string of student-led walk-out protests from Conifer, Wheat Ridge, Arvada West and other high schools.
