The Pittsburgh Steelers are looking to add depth to the offensive line and brought in a familiar face to potentially address that need on Tuesday.

According to the league’s transactions wire, the Steelers brought offensive lineman Nate Herbig in for a workout. The two sides apparently did not reach an agreement, though.
Herbig originally signed with the Steelers in 2023 and served as a reserve lineman for Pittsburgh and appeared in all 17 games but made just two starts that season.
In 2024, Herbig was in line to win the starting center job before suffering an injury that landed him on injured reserve and paved the way for Zach Frazier to get it. Herbig never returned from his injury.
Herbig then landed with the Washington Commanders in 2025, but decided to retire in July. Apparently, Herbig changed his mind.

The brother of Steelers outside linebacker Nick Herbig, Nate would offer a versatile depth option for Pittsburgh, something the team could use in the wake of the season-ending injury to backup Max Scharping.
Over the course of his career, Herbig has played snaps at both guard spots and center.
While the Steelers didn’t sign him following the workout, it’s very possible they will revisit the option at some point down the road.
