Did the Las Vegas Raiders make a mistake selecting Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty with the sixth overall pick of the 2025 NFL Draft? Well, the early returns have not been good, as Jeanty has rushed for just 144 yards and a touchdown through three games, averaging a meager 3.1 yards per carry.
Yes, it’s still very early in Jeanty’s career. However, the 21-year-old was not only billed as a generational talent but also one of the most NFL-ready players in his draft class.

Jeanty’s slow start has left Jacob Robinson of The Athletic wondering if the Raiders made a mistake taking Jeanty rather than an offensive lineman with their top draft pick.
“It’s early, but will it end up a mistake for the Raiders to take Jeanty ahead of Jets OT Armand Membou, Saints OT Kelvin Banks Jr. and Cowboys G Tyler Booker, who has been dominant in the run game — his 93.1 PFF run-blocking grade ranked second among all offensive linemen in Week 3? We’ll see,” Robinson wrote. “Maybe they should’ve done what Carroll did in 2010, his first draft as the de facto GM in Seattle, when many expected him to take RB C.J. Spiller but he instead improved the trenches with OT Russell Okung.”
To be fair, Jeanty has flashed potential at certain moments this season. He did rush for 63 yards during Las Vegas’ Week 3 loss to the Washington Commanders, although he did it on 17 carries. That was good for an average of 3.7 yards per attempt. But maybe we should be a bit more patient with the youngster, who was absolutely dominant in college.

In fact, Jeanty finished just 28 yards shy of topping Barry Sanders’ single-season NCAA rushing record in 2024, racking up 2,601 yards and 29 touchdowns on an absurd seven yards per tote. He also rattled off 1,347 yards and 14 scores the year prior.
It’s also worth mentioning that the Raiders’ offensive line has not exactly been kind to Jeanty as far as opening holes over his first few NFL contests, so this is certainly not all on the rookie halfback.
But there is no question that Jeanty’s slow start has raised some eyebrows across the country.
