The Atlanta Falcons‘ 30-0 loss to the Carolina Panthers was so demoralizing that changes had to be made. On Tuesday, the team fired wide receivers coach Ike Hilliard and transferred his job duties over to passing-game coordinator T.J. Yates.

That wasn’t all, though. The Falcons announced that offensive coordinator Zac Robinson would be moving down from the coaching box to the sideline. This change comes after the team struggled with communication on offense against the Panthers.

Atlanta had multiple delay of game penalties in Week 3, including one that happened right after using a timeout on a critical 3rd-and-1. Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. had an overall rough day, throwing for 172 yards and two interceptions against Carolina’s defense.

When asked about the team’s coaching changes, Penix expressed gratitude from his time working Hilliard.

“I’m always going to love Ike. He’s been nothing but great to me and this team since he’s been here. So, it’s always respect with him,” said Penix. “With the whole losing a coach, that’s above me. Obviously that’s something I can’t really speak on.”

Penix, a player known for his calm demeanor, looked frustrated throughout the afternoon as the offense failed to get into a rhythm. Not only was Atlanta held scoreless, but the team failed to make it into the red zone in Week 3.

While the second-year quarterback said he did not have a preference regarding where Robinson calls plays from, he made it clear that he was still comfortable in Robinson’s offense.

“I love the offense,” Penix said while emphasizing that he needs to perform better. “I like all of it. There’s no excuses to not executing.”

Robinson said the decision to move down from the coaching booth was his idea, and thinks it could be helpful to be closer to the players on the field.

“I just think it’ll be easier to be down there closer to the guys,” explained Robinson, who took responsibility for the team’s abysmal offensive showing. “I take full accountability and full responsibility for how we performed on offense.”

The Falcons will look to bounce back against an injured Washington Commanders team at home in Week 4. Last time these two teams faced off, Penix and Jayden Daniels put on a show but the Commanders ultimately won the game in overtime. Daniels missed Week 3 due to a knee injury and is in danger of missing Sunday’s game in Atlanta.

Check out the team’s Wednesday injury report and updated depth chart ahead of Week 4.
