Brenham High School alum and Denver Broncos wide receiver Courtland Sutton got back this past week with another big game against the Los Angeles Chargers.
His six-reception, 118-yard performance highlighted another busy week for Washington County’s alums across all sports.
Sutton’s efforts made up a majority of Denver’s passing game. His 118 receiving yards made up 77 percent of Denver’s 153 total receiving yards.
His biggest catch came in the final minute of the first half. Sutton ran a post route from the right slot and was open down the field for a 52-yard touchdown catch.
He crossed the 100-yard mark in Week 3 or earlier for the first time since a Week 2 contest against the Houston Texans in 2022. Sutton also has two touchdowns in his first three games of a season for just the second time in his National Football League career. He also caught two touchdowns in the first three games of the 2023 season.
Denver took a 23-20 loss to Los Angeles on a last-second field goal, marking the Broncos’ second straight loss by a field goal.
Sutton and the Broncos will face the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday Night Football this week. Sutton has had success in his three previous meetings against Cincinnati in his career with 11 catches for 152 yards and two touchdowns.
Burton High School alum and San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dee Winters also put up another strong performance in his team’s 16-15 win over the Arizona Cardinals.
Winters produced four solo tackles and four assisted tackles for a second straight week with eight total tackles. He earned a quarterback hit for the first time in his NFL career while also recording his first pass deflection of the year.
He again played 100 percent of San Francisco’s defensive snaps, equalling his Week 1 workrate. The 49ers played 66 defensive snaps last Sunday with Winters also added two special teams snaps.
Winters is on his career-best two-week stretch with 16 tackles. The past two weeks equals his performances in Week 16 and 17 of the 2024 season, when he also recorded eight tackles in each game.
San Francisco will face the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.
Brenham High School alum Austin Schlottman continued to play a minor special teams role for the New York Giants this past week, playing in just two special teams snaps on his team’s 22-9 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. His workload is a decrease from the seven special teams snaps played against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 2.
New York goes up against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday and continues to seek its first win of the season.
Volleyball
Washington County’s various volleyball alumni are continuing to do big things in their respective college homes.
Brenham alum and Texas State senior Brooke Bentke returned to the kill column on Sunday with five kills in six attacks against Hawaii in the Stanford Tournament. She broke a five-match streak without a kill on Sunday and helped the Bobcats pick up a four-set win over Hawaii.
She also earned two digs, two block assists, a set assist and an ace.
Blinn alum and Rice junior Kellen Dorotik produced 12 kills over three matches in her team’s second home tournament of the year. She earned five kills against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and seven kills against TCU. Dorotik also produced a season-high four digs against TCU.
Brenham alum and Liberty sophomore Charli Crowson is fitting into the Flames’ rotation well. She produced at least seven assists in all three of Liberty’s matches in the Cougar Challenge at Houston this past weekend.
Crowson earned seven assists against both Houston and North Alabama and added 11 assists against McNeese for her fifth match with at least 10 assists this season. She also played a role defensively with five digs against both Houston and North Alabama.
Conference play begins this week for Crowson, Dorotik and Bentke throughout the NCAA Division I ranks.
Brenham alum and Colorado Christian sophomore Brooklin Frazier already began conference play in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference with her team taking a pair of five-set wins this past Friday and Saturday.
Frazier played a significant role in her team’s win over Chadron State, collecting a season-high 10 digs. Her effort tied her college career-high with an Oct. 25, 2024 match against Westminster.
Blinn alum and West Texas A&M junior setter Bromli Watson also is making a big impression under former Blinn coach Terry Gamble. Watson recorded a season-high .571 hitting percentage against UT Tyler this past Friday with four kills on seven attacks with no errors.
Watson has kills in 10 straight matches. But her biggest impact comes at her primary responsibilities of being a setter.
She recorded 15 assists in both of West Texas A&M’s three-set wins this week. Those numbers broke a nine-match streak with at least 20 assists, which had included a seven-game stretch with at least 30 assists in every match.
Watson’s Lady Buffs will begin conference play in the Lone Star Conference this week.
