The Titans’ No. 1 draft pick is back on course to start his fourth straight game Sunday.
Quarterback Cam Ward was listed as a limited practice participant during Wednesday’s walk-through due to an ankle/calf injury.
But he was a full practice participant Thursday, as the Titans (0-3) prepared for Sunday’s AFC South game at Houston (0-3).
However, things don’t look optimistic for starting right tackle JC Latham (hip), who missed his eighth straight practice overall and second straight this week. It appears likely Latham will sit out his third consecutive contest, meaning the Titans will start either John Ojukwu or Oli Udoh at that position.
Ward will be adapting to a new play-caller this Sunday, as head coach Brian Callahan turned those duties over to quarterbacks coach Bo Hardegree earlier this week (read here).
Hardegree has had experience calling plays for a rookie quarterback, as he served as the Raiders’ interim offensive coordinator/play-caller in 2023 when Aidan O’Connell was the starting quarterback. O’Connell and the Raiders produced a 5-4 record in nine contests with Hardegree calling plays that season.
“I think it’s going to be great,” Ward said of the switch. “[Hardegree] understands the [offense] just as a whole. He understands where my head is at, just what I see on the field. He’s had experience with the Raiders. He’s been around some great quarterbacks and players there.”
Ward noted that Hardegree was one of the first coaches to get in touch with him during the pre-draft process, and that he also helped Ward learn the Titans’ offense.
“I have a great relationship with him,” Ward said. “I meet with him every day. He just knows where my mind is and how I feel space on the field. I just think he’s going to be a good addition for us.”
Ward threw for a season-high 219 yards and one touchdown in last Sunday’s loss to Indianapolis, but also suffered his first interception, which was returned for a touchdown by the Colts’ Kenny Moore.
Ward and the Titans will be trying to earn their first victory of this season, while trying to stop a nine-game slide dating back to 2024.
“We got to throw everything out there to win a football game,” Ward said. “We got to put ourselves back on the right track to try to win our division. And that’s going to be a week-to-week process, but we got to stick to it.”
