BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Could sponsored jersey patches soon be coming to college football uniforms?
That could be the case, according to a report from Yahoo! Sports insider Ross Dellenger.
Dellenger reported Thursday that D1 commissioners were in Chicago this week and received an update on the long-running discussion of whether to allow the jersey patches or not.
Dellenger says the legislation to allow the sponsored patches is expected to be approved and could even appear on jerseys in time for the 2026 season.
However, he says there is a disagreement on who should set and control the amount of patches on each jersey. At this time, officials are debating on if schools, conferences, or the NCAA should set the rules and stipulations. Dellenger says most individuals feel strongly in restricting the number of patches on jerseys to avoid overexposure.
The news of patches coming to college football uniforms comes after both Auburn and Alabama put on-field sponsored markings on their own fields before the 2025 season began.
According to a 2024 report, revenue for the jersey patches for top football brands could exceed $10 million annually.
