Brock Purdy had two words when he first saw teammate and fellow 49ers quarterback Mac Jones’ fire-engine red suit in Week 1.

“The first week, the red suit going into Seattle, I saw him come off the bus and I was like, ‘No way,’ ” Purdy told reporters Thursday. “This dude is funny, so I love all of the suits and he’s got good taste.”

Purdy might have been surprised, but Jones isn’t — suits long have been part of his routine.

“I probably have like between like 60 and 50 probably,” Jones said Thursday. “But yeah, I like suits and I’ve always worn them. We had to wear them in college, so that’s where it started. So, I had a couple each year there. And then I’ve always worn a suit in the NFL. I just feel like that’s what you’re supposed to do because you’re going to work and that’s kind of how I go about it. But yeah, I like suits.”

Jones stepped in admirably for Purdy in Weeks 2 and 3 while the starting quarterback was sidelined by a toe injury, leading the 49ers to wins over the New Orleans Saints and Arizona Cardinals. The backup QB’s suits fit right in alongside the sometimes-goofy nature the Faithful have come to expect from him at the postgame podium.

Asked if he avoids repeats, Jones admitted he’ll re-wear when the mood strikes.

“I’ll re-wear,” Jones admitted. “I’m not too picky. If I like it and it fits what my mindset is that week, then I’ll usually wear it. But yeah, I got a lot of different suits and the person who creates them is very talented. So, I’m happy to have them on my side.”

The decision usually comes down to feel.

“I don’t know, just like how I’m feeling that morning,” Jones explained. “I just pick my suit the night before and go out there and roll it out there.”

One of the most noticeable parts of Jones’ outfits are the shoes, and they often make it look like he isn’t wearing socks.

“I have like the little socks when you’re wearing the no-show, so I still got socks on even though it doesn’t look like it,” Jones added. “I found out that’s kind of old school when you have your sock all the way pulled up. My dad used to come home from work, and he’s got the lines from the socks. I’m like, I can’t be doing that.”

When asked to rank the red Week 1 suit, Jones said it’s near the top.

“That’s one of my cool ones, but I think they’re all cool,” Jones noted. “It’s all about showing up to work and that’s how I feel you should come to the game.”

Whether bold red or classic cuts, Jones’ suits already have become a signature part of his NFL image. The only question now is what’s coming down the tunnel next.
