KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Friday he anticipates wide receiver Xavier Worthy will make his return from a shoulder injury during Sunday’s home game against the Baltimore Ravens.
Those words were backed by the team’s official injury report released Friday afternoon. Worthy, who was a full participant in all three practices this week, did not receive an injury game-status designation. That means he’s expected to be back in the team’s starting lineup Sunday.
Reid said he liked what he had seen from Worthy in workouts this week.
“That was an upper-body injury, so he’s been able to keep himself in good shape, ready to go,” Reid said. “He looked good with what we asked him to do there.”
Worthy injured himself while running a crossing route in Week 1 on the third play of the season against the Los Angeles Chargers. He collided with tight end Travis Kelce, who was attempting to shield Worthy’s defender to open him up against man coverage.
In the locker room on Friday, Kelce said he’d be relieved when Worthy returned to the field.
“Get me to stop thinking that I almost killed one of my guys, man,” Kelce said with a smile. “I love that dude, man. He’s such a hard worker, such a valuable piece. He draws so much attention because of his speed and his ability to make plays with the ball in his hands. So getting him back there is definitely gonna change a lot for us.”
Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy said this week that Worthy’s progress was adding to some positive feelings in the offensive meeting rooms. Receiver Rashee Rice, who is sitting out the first six games with an NFL suspension, was also able to return to the building this week.
“We know where we’re at, at 1-2. We understand the significance of this game,” Nagy said. “But it’s slowly coming back to that vibe, and Xavier’s a big part of that.”
Worthy, who played all 17 games as a rookie, was the Chiefs’ leading wide receiver last year. He was set to be the team’s top outside threat during Rice’s suspension before the injury took place.
“He’s so anxious to get back out there and show us what he can do,” Nagy said, “and show us the growth.”
Worthy has practiced with a brace on his right shoulder the last two weeks.
Reid said the team would not have him return if he wasn’t healthy enough to play.
“Whether you have a shoulder or not, they’re gonna try to knock you around a little bit,” Reid said of the team’s future opponents. “But that’s why you want to make sure that you’re in the right frame of mind to go do it — and physically OK.”
