Upsets, near-upsets, and overall just a lot of very entertaining football.
Eight of the 14 games so far this week have been decided by one score, while some were complete and utter blowouts. It can’t all be pure cinema.
Loud statements were made in Week 4, and there’s cause for concern for some playoff hopefuls.
Here is where the 49ers sit in the NFL Week 5 power rankings heading into the “Monday Night Football” doubleheader and after their loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday at Levi’s Stadium.
32. Tennessee Titans (Last week: 32)
Record: 0-4
With the No. 1 pick (for the second consecutive year) in the 2026 NFL Draft, the Tennessee Titans select …
31. New Orleans Saints (Last week: 31)
Record: 0-4
Spencer Rattler and Co. continue to look like somewhat of an NFL team against the best in football. That’s a win. In a loss, of course.
30. Carolina Panthers (Last week: 29)
Record: 1-3
Defense pitches a shutout one week, then surrenders 42 points the next. It’s unclear exactly where they are in the rebuild, but it’s nowhere close to being competitive.
29. Miami Dolphins (Last week: 30)
Record: 0-3
(Monday Night Football)
28. New York Jets (Last week: 28)
Record: 0-3
(Monday Night Football)
27. Cleveland Browns (Last week: 25)
Record: 1-3
Joe Flacco’s gotta go. It’s time to see what either of the rookies have. And no, it shouldn’t be Jameis Winston time. Replacing one interception-prone quarterback with arguably the worst in league history is not the move.
26. New York Giants (Last week: 27)
Record: 1-3
Jaxson Dart impressed in his NFL debut, but the Malik Nabers new is utterly devastating. New York has an exciting, young core that helped deliver them a big win over the Chargers on Sunday, but it will be missing one of its biggest pieces for the remainder of the season.
25. New England Patriots (Last week: 26)
Record: 2-2
Drake Maye has mellowed out after an erratic Week 1 and the offense is starting to find its groove after a slow start. Stefon Diggs looks health and ready to be a true No. 1 again.
24. Cincinnati Bengals (Last week: 23)
Record: 2-1
(Monday Night Football)
23. Las Vegas Raiders (Last week: 22)
Record: 1-3
Welcome to the NFL, Ashton Jeanty. Unfortunately for the rookie, his breakout game was spoiled by Geno Smith.
22. Houston Texans (Last week: 24)
Record: 1-3
A very nice game for C.J. Stroud, who is trying to wash away a year of stank. A matchup against the Titans was just what the doctor ordered.
21. Chicago Bears (Last week: 21)
Record: 2-2
The defense won Chicago this game on a day when Caleb Williams was not great. Things might not be as dire for the Bears as we thought …
20. Arizona Cardinals (Last week: 17)
Record: 2-2
Marvin Harrison Jr. looked like the most broken man on Earth in the first half before recovering nicely in the second half. This offense is stinky without him being a true No. 1. Losing on walk-off field goals in back-to-back weeks is brutal.
19. Dallas Cowboys (Last week: 19)
Record: 1-2-1
There’s no question Dallas’ offense can put up numbers, it seems even without CeeDee Lamb. The Cowboys nearly got the last laugh over their former defensive superstar, but their defense still stinks.
18. Minnesota Vikings (Last week: 15)
Record: 2-2
Carson Wentz can air it out, but it won’t be pretty. As if there was any doubt that J.J. McCarthy would get his job back when he returns.
17. Atlanta Falcons (Last week: 20)
Record: 2-2
After failing to score against the lowly Panthers last week, Michael Penix and Bijan Robinson led an excellent bounce-back offensively. I honestly don’t know what this team is.
16. Jacksonville Jaguars (Last week: 18)
Record: 3-1
I’ve seen enough: Their defense, which leads the NFL in takeaways, is good. And Travis Etienne is all the way back. I still don’t think Trevor Lawrence is anything special, but he helped secure a huge road win.
15. Denver Broncos (Last week: 14)
Record: 1-2
(Monday Night Football)
14. Washington Commanders (Last week: 12)
Record: 2-2
This team is a shell of itself without Jayden Daniels and Terry McLaurin. They’re going to need both next week in a tough matchup against the Chargers.
13. Indianapolis Colts (Last week: 13)
Record: 3-1
Ahh, there’s the Daniel Jones we know. A close loss against a very good team, nothing to be too concerned about.
12. Baltimore Ravens (Last week: 6)
Record: 1-3
Lamar Jackson simply cannot beat Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs. To make matters worse, he now might be hurt. Baltimore’s season is off to a disastrous start.
11. San Francisco 49ers (Last week: 9)
Record: 3-1
No late-game magic this time. They are going to miss Nick Bosa so much, that they have no choice but to go out and trade for a pass-rusher soon. Just a sloppy, sloppy game, and Brock Purdy and his receivers are to blame.
10. Pittsburgh Steelers (Last week: 16)
Record: 3-1
DK Metcalf finally had his welcome-to-Pittsburgh moment. But in Dublin, Ireland. Any concerns about the defense have been quelled for now.
9. Seattle Seahawks (Last week: 11)
Record: 3-1
The offense has found its groove and the defense is humming. Especially the D-line. This is a good football team. Boy, did they benefit from the new kickoff rule at the end.
8. Kansas City Chiefs (Last week: 10)
Record: 2-2
There’s just something about Patrick Mahomes in huge games. Never, ever, ever bet against him. A statement win.
7. Green Bay Packers (Last week: 7)
Record: 2-1-1
The Micah Parsons Revenge Game ended up being all about Jordan Love, Josh Jacobs and Romeo Doubs before a defensive collapse nearly ended up in an upset. Go figure.
6. Los Angeles Rams (Last week: 8)
Record: 3-1
Matthew Stafford is slingin’ it. Puka Nacua is a monster and the defense is elite. They’re the best in the West, and they can prove it as soon as Thursday night.
5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Last week: 5)
Record: 3-1
There is no doubt the Bucs are one of the 10 best teams in the NFL, but they found out today against the champs that there are levels to this. They’re just not in that tier.
4. Los Angeles Chargers (Last week: 3)
Record: 3-1
A game to forget for Justin Herbert in a bad loss, but against a stout Giants D-line it isn’t cause for too much concern. The Omarion Hampton breakout is here.
3. Detroit Lions (Last week: 4)
Record: 3-1
Amon-Ra St. Brown, through four weeks, is on pace for 25 touchdowns this season. Is that sustainable? No, but it shows just how elite Detroit’s offense still is.
2. Philadelphia Eagles (Last week: 2)
Record: 4-0
Philly can take care of business against a very good opponent without an effective Saquon Barkley and A.J. Brown. That’s just how great they are.
1. Buffalo Bills (Last week: 1)
Record: 4-0
Josh Allen and James Cook. Week after week after week. Patriots, Falcons and Panthers are their next three opponents with a Week 7 bye sprinkled in. It should be a 7-0 start.
