A group of students in Taunton, Massachusetts, got to experience an ultimate gym class with New England Patriots players on Tuesday. The team visited students at the James L. Mulcahey Elementary School and hosted an interactive PLAY60 event. Players greeted students in kindergarten through second grade, who will be lined the hallways. Students in third and fourth grade participated in an ultimate gym class featuring football skills and drills stations run by Patriots players. Patriots cornerback Alex Austin and defensive end Isaiah Iton taught students the principles of football and the importance of living an active, healthy lifestyle. “Fitness is major for me in my career, you know, I have to stay in shape — just feeling good. And then for me, I feel like when it comes to staying in shape, it does more than just physically keeps me right, it does me a great justice in my mental game, as well,” Austin said. This event is part of the Patriots’ PLAY60 initiative, which encourages students to stay active for at least 60 minutes a day. In addition to the Patriots players, the elementary kids are also being coached by Taunton High School football players. “I didn’t know this was happening until two days ago. I get a call from my coach, ‘Hey, you want to go coach some elementary school kids with some professional athletes?’ Like, ‘Yes!,'” senior Corbin Melo said. “This is what it’s about: getting outside, learning through networking, meeting people, and just getting out of your comfort zone, and that’s exactly what our students need to have the growth mindset that we want them to have in order to hit these academic goals,” Mulcahey Elementary School Assistant Principal Keenon Cunningham said. The school also received NFL Flag Football kits from the Patriots Foundation to encourage students to stay active for 60 minutes a day.
