The chant in the Bears locker room is becoming a tradition.
Coach Ben Johnson gathers the team together, gives out game balls for top players, and then brings the entire team in for a more-than-spirited rendition of “Good, better, best!…Never let it rest.. Till your good is better and your better is best”!
Johnson, calm and serious on the sidelines during games, lets all his emotions hang out afterwards while surrounded by his players in the cozy comfort of the Bears’ locker room. He then literally shouts the above chant at his highest level of decibels with face turning various shades of red, and maybe even a slightly dangerous purple hue.
But can you blame him?
Two wins in a row for the rookie coach, and Sunday’s win over the Raiders was in as dramatic fashion as you’re going to get. A nail-biter all the way, with the lead changing hands multiple times, before it came down to a Raiders field goal attempt to win the game from 54 yards out. A long kick, but still a makeable distance for most NFL kickers.
Bear defensive back and special teams ace Josh Blackwell was the hero, as he came rushing in from the outside and made a perfectly timed dive towards the kicker and got his hand on the ball to deflect it from its intended target, thus clinching the victory for the Bears.
Whew! A tense moment and a collective sigh of relief was felt by Bear fans throughout the city.
That’s two in a row now, and an overall record of 2-2.
The arrow is definitely pointing up for the Orange and Blue. Quarterback Caleb Williams has been solid if not spectacular of late, and defensive backs Jacob Brisker, Kevin Byard III, and Tyrique Stevenson have been superb in both their coverage and picking off passes.
A bye week looms ahead, so it’s a rest weekend for the Bears (and their fans), but the following Sunday will be a big challenge as they will take on a very tough Washington Commanders team on the road, led by (assuming he is healthy) their brilliant young quarterback Jaden Daniels.
What will it take to win their third in a row?
Easy answer: “Good, better, best!… Never let it rest!… Till your good is better and your best is best!”
Bears fans and players can easily get used to that chant.0 Just keep those big wins coming!
