Veteran tight end Travis Kelce, 35, isn’t as involved in the Kansas City Chiefs‘ offensive game plan as he once was. The future Pro Hall of Famer had arguably his most complete game of the season in Kansas City’s dominant 37-20 win over the Baltimore Ravens last Sunday, catching all five of his targets for 48 yards.
Kelce played 66 percent of the snaps in the win and has averaged just 74 percent on the season, which would be his lowest mark since his first full season in the NFL. He mulled retirement this offseason but ultimately decided to return to the Chiefs.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid was asked about his recently engaged star’s time on the field. “[That amount is] probably a good area,” the three-time Super Bowl-winning coach told the media.

During his All-Pro peak in the late 2010s, Kelce maintained a 90 percent snap-count share for three consecutive seasons (2017-2019), reaching a high of 95 percent in 2018. That year, he caught 103 passes for 1,336 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Despite the 35-year-old’s diminished role in offense, Reid was still pleased with his play. “I thought he really played well,” he said.
“In both the run and pass game, I thought he looked strong all the way through. He’s in great shape right now. That’s the important part — he came back and he really trained hard and aggressively for this thing.”

On the season, Kelce has 15 catches for 182 yards and a score. Last year, the veteran finished with 97 receptions for 823 yards and three touchdowns in 16 contests. From 2016 to 2022, Kelce topped 1,000+ receiving yards each campaign.
“He’s such a big part of [the offense,” Reid added. “Not only his effort, but just the mentality that he comes into these games with.”
“He’s all in all the time. He gets mad at me, but it’s my job to make sure that we don’t get too many reps in there. We give him at least a blow here and there. He’d play every play if he had his choice.”

Thanks to Kelce’s contribution, quarterback Patrick Mahomes had his strongest game of the season, completing 25 of his 37 passes for 270 yards and four touchdowns. The Kansas City offense was also buoyed by the return of speedster Xavier Worthy.
“With Xavier being back, it’s that threat of being able to win over the top,” Mahomes said after the game. “It’s scary for defenses when they’re going to bring pressure, knowing you can get it to that guy — short or deep — and then he can make plays happen.”
