NewOrleans.Fotoball’s Nick Underhill first reported that New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr is retiring from the NFL in the wake of his injured throwing shoulder, which was confirmed by an announcement from the team. Underhill adds that Carr explored all options to return to the field, including another surgery on the same arm he’s had work done on before, but instead is hanging up his cleats.

Expect the Saints to formally process Carr’s retirement after June 1 when they can maximize the salary cap benefits, but either way they’ll get cap relief. Carr signed a four-year, $150 million contract with the Saints in 2023 but ultimately played just two seasons in New Orleans before calling it a career.

This isn’t the way anyone thought it would play out, but it does allow Carr and the Saints to go their separate ways. Rookie second-round pick Tyler Shough is in the driver’s seat to start when the season kicks off in September.
