Every team misses field goals, but not every team misses them the way the Los Angeles Rams have. They have arguably the worst kicking operation in the NFL right now, getting four kicks blocked in the last four games alone.
It’s costing them in a big way, too. Their two blocked kicks against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 3 were the difference in the game; if Joshua Karty had made just one of them, the Rams would have won.

And on Thursday night, Karty had another kick blocked, this one a PAT that would’ve given the Rams a 21-20 lead in the fourth quarter.
Sean McVay was frustrated after the two blocks against the Eagles and now with another costly miss, he’s borderline fed up with the entire operation.
“Oh man, I wish it was just one thing,” he said Friday. “When you watch the protection, we have to fix it. It’s not one thing in particular. There are different locations, spots and people that have not executed the way that we’re capable of. We’ve got to consistently use better techniques. I thought we had a hold on it. I thought we did a good job against Indianapolis. I thought we had a good handle on it and clearly I was not right in that. We have to fix it. We have to go back to work, we have to get the right techniques, and we have to get the right people on there because that has been a killer for us and it’s cost us two games.”
The Rams made it out of their game against the Colts last week unscathed, which was encouraging. McVay thought they fixed the problem, but it popped back up again on Thursday night when the 49ers blocked Karty’s PAT.

Karty also missed a 53-yarder wide right and is now 9-for-12 on field goals and 12-for-14 on PATs; the only non-blocked miss he’s had was the one last night from 53 yards.
He doesn’t seem to be the problem. The protection has been nonexistent, and there might even be some issues with the snap and hold operation that’s giving opponents more time to rush through the line and get their hands up.
The Rams have a few extra days to look things over after playing on Thursday night, but hopefully they can get this weakness corrected for the foreseeable future.
