COFFEYVILLE, Kan. – Iowa Western fell behind early, thanks to a Coffeyville Community College field goal midway through the first quarter.

A big second quarter gave the Reivers the distance they were looking for, but the Red Ravens didn’t go away, scoring a pair of touchdowns to come to within less than a possession.

The Reivers finally put the game away in the fourth quarter and shook off a late Red Ravens touchdown in an eventual 35-24 road win Saturday in Coffeyville.

After an Aiden Burgess 24-yard field goal with about five minutes remaining in the first gave Coffeyville a 3-0 lead, IWCC finally broke through in the second period.

Malachi Marshall had a 3-yard pass to DeAndre Horn to give the Reivers a 3-0 lead 45 seconds into the second quarter. Both teams exchanged possessions over the next 10 minutes before the Reivers made things happen back-to-back on special teams.

With 4-1/2 minutes left in the half, Jaxson Cherry blocked a Red Ravens punt, and Tony Busch scooped up the loose ball and redeemeed it for a 20-yard touchdown return and a 14-3 Reivers lead.

On the kickoff, Red Raven Charles Morgan got a 12-yard return before he was stripped of the ball by the Reivers’ Luke Sternberg at the Red Raven 10. A Red Raven unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on third down gave the Reivers first-and-goal from the 6, and Daniel Swinney went the distance on the play to make it 21-3.

Coffeyville didn’t go away, scoring on a 4-yard run to make it 21-10. The Red Ravens then recovered an onside kick and got a 33-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Jackson on fourth down to close the gap to 21-17.

But IWCC restored their lead with a Marshall touchdown pass to Corey Washington with 7:52 left in the third, and a Swinney 1-yard rush with 9:17 left in the game to make it an 18-point game. The Red Ravens scored on a late 29-yard touchdown reception by Tyler Jackson, but the Reivers recovered the onside kick attempt and with less than two minutes left ran out the clock.

Marshall was 21-for-33 for 184 yards passing and two touchdowns. Swinney led the ground game with 97 rushes on 18 carries and two touchdowns. Jerome Baker led the Reiver defense with eight tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss, while AHSTW alum Luke Sternberg recovered a fumble. Blake Hawkins and Jaxon Cherry both had 2.5 sacks on the day, as the Reiver defense recorded nine sacks on the afternoon.

It’s another road game for the Reivers (4-1) as they’ll play at No. 13 Snow in Utah. Kick off is set for 8 p.m. local time.
