The New England Patriots are expected to sign Arkansas State guard Mekhi Butler to a contract, according to KPRC 2’s Aaron Wilson.
Butler was invited to rookie minicamp by the Patriots over the weekend as a tryout player. That meant no guaranteed contract on attendance. It was simply an opportunity to step on the field and prove himself to the coaching staff.

Butler obviously made quite the impression by earning a contract as a walk-on. The Patriots have been working hard to improve their offensive line depth throughout the offseason. Butler would give them another young talent to work with and develop behind the scenes as a potential contributor in the future.
The guard position is currently stocked with talent, including Mike Onwenu, Cole Strange, Layden Robinson, Sidy Sow, Tyrese Robinson and Wes Schweitzer. This is the first of many hurdles for Butler to actually make the 53-man roster.
But it’s a strong start for a player who didn’t have as many eyes coming out of college. This will be one of the many underdog stories to keep an eye on heading into training camp.
