Following a 21-17 upset win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton passed his mentor, Bill Parcells, on the NFL’s all-time wins list with 173 career victories.

Payton is now tied with John Harbaugh and Jeff Fisher for 14th place on the all-time list. He’s 18 wins away from passing Dan Reeves (190 wins) and cracking the top ten (pending results from games involving Harbaugh and Mike Tomlin, who has 186 wins).

Broncos owner and CEO Greg Penner presented Payton with a game ball after Sunday’s victory.

“I’ve had a chance to get to know to know Hall of Fame coach Bill Parcells over the last few years,” Penner told the locker room. “We all know what a mentor and friend he’s been to our coach Sean Payton. Today, Sean passed Coach Parcells on wins.”

“He and I spoke this past week, and we don’t keep track of that kind of stuff,” Payton said in his postgame press conference when asked about passing Parcells. “And then he was just getting back from being put in the Patriots Ring of Honor. He shared a lot of memories about coaching in this division. He coached in it forever. And that was [Joe] Gibbs in Washington. That was [Tom] Landry, that was [Dick] Vermeil.

“It was a salty division, still is. But obviously, he and I were talking about coming to Philly and listen, he agreed. He talked about going to Washington in that old stadium when you play a tough opponent like Philly on the road, I told our team, I said, ‘Look, you’re going to forget the money, the cars, all that stuff, but you’re not going to forget just these moments, this trip over to London. Ultimately, that’s what you do it for. You’re making memories.’”

After beating the Eagles, the Broncos took an overnight flight to England for their Week 6 showdown with the New York Jets in London. That game will be televised on NFL Network on Oct. 12.
