Former Montana State Bobcats standout Tommy Mellott is on the hunt for a new professional football home this week after being released by the New Orleans Saints.

The transactional news was announced by the Saints on Tuesday, just over a month after Mellott had signed with New Orleans as a practice squad player back on September 2.

It’s been a tumultuous start to Mellott’s professional career: The Butte native and 2024 Walter Payton Award winner was drafted by the Las Vegas Raiders in the sixth round this spring but then cut in late August before the 53-man roster deadline.

Mellott worked on changing positions from quarterback to wide receiver with the Raiders. During the preseason Mellott recorded just two receptions for one yard while on special teams he had two kick returns for 63 yards (31.5 average with a long of 42) and also field two punts for zero return yards.
