NFL Week 5 Overreactions

USAT’s Lorenzo Reyes breaks down the best games from NFL Week 5.

Sports Seriously

The Dallas Cowboys are likely a few weeks away from being reasonably, healthy, but they are taking small steps that way as they prepare for their trip to the Carolina Panthers.

Small steps are better than none, as they should be healthier than they were when they routed the hapless New York Jets last week.

There still likely isn’t going to be CeeDee Lamb, but that could give more opportunities to Ryan Flourney, and that didn’t look to bad in the previous game.

Here is what Dallas is up to.

Dallas Cowboys injury report: Some good news, but CeeDee Lamb unlikely

Starting left tackle Tyler Guyton is the first of the Dallas wounded offensive linemen to return, as he has been cleared from his concussion and is a full go at practice. He’ll play Sunday.

On the downside, pass rusher Dante Fowler, who had his best game of the year against the Jets, missed Thursday’s practice with an illness, and his status Sunday is up in the air.

Guard Tyler Smith looks closer and closer to playing this week, though he is still questionable. Receiver CeeDee Lamb, guard Tyler Booker, and receiver KaVontae Turpin are likely going to miss at least one more week, though Lamb in particular is getting closer.

For Carolina, running back Chuba Hubbard (calf) did not practice on Thursday and was withheld from team drills. Also not practicing again was tackle Taylor Moton (elbow).

Ryan Flournoy

The Dallas Cowboys’ second-year receiver is coming off the biggest day of his short pro career against the New York Jets. After logging 14 receptions for 137 yards in the first 16 games of his career, he had six catches for 114 yards against the New York Jets.

A sixth-round pick last year out of Southeast Missouri State, Flourney has had to take on a bigger role in CeeDee Lamb’s absence, and now has to prove that his Jets game wasn’t a one-off.

The game against Carolina could be Dallas’ last game without Lamb and when Lamb and KaVontae Turpin return, Flourney is likely to go back to being a depth player, but he’ll have another shot this weekend to show he’s a major part of Dallas’ future.
