South Florida rejoined the rankings at No. 24 after two weeks of dominant victories, first defeating South Carolina State 63-14, then beating Charlotte 54-26. Although they were turnover-prone (four turnovers vs. Charlotte), they also forced four turnovers. The offense was terrific otherwise, with 631 total yards, 407 on the ground and 224 through the air. Seven different players found the endzone for USF, with Byrum Brown leading the way on the ground, rushing 17 times for 162 yards.
The Mean Green boast one of the most prolific offenses in the country, averaging 44.8 points per game (8th in NCAA), but they haven’t faced a ranked opponent yet. In their last outing, a 36-22 win over South Alabama, it was running back Caleb Hawkins making the difference, as he rushed 16 times for 140 yards and two touchdowns, while also catching a 68-yard pass from Drew Mestemaker for a score.
