The San Francisco 49ers came into Sunday night’s battle with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as underdogs at Raymond James Stadium, and they weren’t able to earn the win, falling 30-19.

Kyle Shanahan went with Mac Jones again, with Brock Purdy dealing with a toe injury. The offense wasn’t efficient enough, and the defense was completely torn apart after linebacker Fred Warner left with a significant ankle injury.

After a disappointing loss, there were plenty of 49ers who shouldn’t be thrilled with their performance and will need to put in extra effort on the practice field this week before they play again.

WR Jauan Jennings

Jennings didn’t get his first target until late in the third quarter when he caught a pass for seven yards on third-and-3. On San Francisco’s first drive of the second half, Jennings was flagged twice, killing the momentum and forcing the team to kick a field goal. Jennings after the game told reporters he’s dealing with a slew of significant injuries which may have played a role in his lackluster outing.

TE Luke Farrell

Farrell continues to be a non-factor in the passing game. The only time he was really noticed on Sunday was when he allowed a cornerback to get around to sack Jones. Luckily, Farrell jumped on it, but they shouldn’t have even been in that position.

C Jake Brendel

Brendel allowed multiple sacks and was called for multiple penalties. He also failed to hold his block on a screen pass to Christian McCaffrey, resulting in a minimal gain. With all of the issues, the starting center not doing his job is an unacceptable problem.

The entire defense after Fred Warner’s injury

Warner went down in the second quarter and after holding the Buccaneers to a punt on their next drive, San Francisco allowed an eight-play 63-yard scoring drive, a five-play 72-yard scoring drive, an eight-play 66-yard scoring drive and an eight-play 55-yard drive that ended with a missed field goal. Without Warner the 49ers allowed 309 yards on 37 plays (8.4 yards per play) and 24 points across five drives.

They couldn’t get after the quarterback consistently and couldn’t tackle when they finally got to Tampa Bay’s ballcarriers. The unit also made it 13 games in a row without an interception, which is the longest drought in NFL history.

If Warner’s going to miss time, they’ll need to find someone to communicate the defensive play calls well and cover running backs and right ends.
