CINCINNATI, Ohio — The first head coach fired this season in the NFL is a former Bengals assistant.

On Monday, the Titans fired head coach Brian Callahan.

A former offensive coordinator of the Bengals prior to 2024 when he was hired by Tennessee, Callahan went just 4-19 as head coach of the Titans.

The Titans had the first pick in last April’s NFL draft and selected Miami quarterback Cam Ward. But Callahan, Ward and the Titans have struggled to start the season with a 1-5 record.

Their lone win came in Week 5 at Arizona, helped in part because of Cardinals running back Emari Demercado fumbling the ball before crossing the goal line on a potential touchdown.

The Titans are coming off a 20-10 loss at the Raiders on Sunday and they gained only 225 yards, which was their second-worst performance in terms of yards and points this season.

Callahan was hired as offensive coordinator of the Bengals in 2019 when Zac Taylor got the job as head coach. He had been in charge of the Bengals offense for five seasons before earning the head coaching job in Tennessee.

With the help of Callahan, the Bengals finished in the top 10 in scoring in 2021 and 2022.
