QUINCY — Emotions ran high for Quincy Notre Dame as the Raiders held senior night for Tuesday’s game against Pittsfield at the Pit.

There were some shaky moments at first for QND, but the Raiders settled in and came away with a 2-0 sweep over Pittsfield.

“I think we were just kind of worked up and really excited for senior night,” said QND senior middle hitter Eva Breckenkamp. “The jitters kind of got to us and it’s hard because we’re so excited and we just really want to win and make it special.”

Prior to the game, QND honored all eight of its seniors — Breckenkamp, outside hitter Nora Wiley, defensive specialist Morgan Winking, setter Taylor Genenbacher, outside hitter Tristan Pieper, defensive specialist Lilli Foster, outside hitter Addie Flesch and defensive specialist Sofia Tapuaiga.

“With eight seniors, we’re going to graduate quite a bit,” said QND head coach Danielle White. “They’re a great group of girls all around, great leadership, great students in the classroom and great young ladies. They’ve done a lot for the program. It’s going to be hard to say goodbye, but I’m really proud of what they’ve accomplished.”

Pittsfield came out strong and held the lead at various points during the first set, including being up 22-21 late in the opening set.

However, the Raiders regrouped and scored four straight points to take the first set 25-21.

“We just kind of had a talk about it,” said Wiley. “We got back to our game and started serving well.”

That momentum from closing out the first set carried over to the second set as the Raiders got off to a 6-0 start.

QND never looked back as it cruised to a second set victory at 25-10 as it had outstanding serving from Breckenkamp, Wiley, Tapuaiga and Genenbacher.

“We’ve been focusing on serving,” said Coach White. “It’s a part of the game that a lot of people view as easy, but there’s a lot of errors in it. So we’re really focusing on keeping the ball on our side and controlling the game with the serve. So when Taylor and then Eva went on a serving run, I think it really pushed our momentum forward.”

The Saukees were never able to recover after QND rallied to win the first set, but did some nice things on the floor.

“We came out really strong against a really good team,” said Pittsfield head coach Sydney Himmelman. “So we did a lot of things well and then kind of fizzled off in the second set. It was great to see them come out and do well against a good team in the first set.”

Pittsfield had their performances when their offense was balanced with several different hitters in the mix.

“I think we do our best to keep a well-rounded offense,” said Himmelman. “Sophia Gengler had a lot of nice swings on the outside. She’s been one of our go to people on the offensive end, which is good to see from her.”

Wiley led with four aces, Genenbacher had a team-high nine assists and libero Sophia White paced the team with three digs.

Breckenkamp and Wiley led the Raiders with six kills each.

“Just their aggressiveness at the net helps,” said Coach White. “We’re really focusing on getting more movement in the front row. Those hitters are really getting up and being aggressive and wanting every ball they can possibly go get. I always know that no matter where the ball is set for them, them two are always going to go chase it down and give it their all.”

Wiley feels that the QND front row still has room for improvement.

“I don’t think we were our strongest,” said Wiley. “We still have some things we need to practice on.”

Up next for Pittsfield (14-10) is a home game against Mendon Unity (22-4) at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

“This is a good one to have coming up into regionals where we’re going to be playing some tough teams,” said Himmelman’s of playing QND. “So it’s a good preparation game.”

Up next for QND (23-5) is a home game against Quincy High School (25-5) at 7 p.m. on Monday.

“I’m so excited,” said Breckenkamp. “I’m friends with a bunch of girls on that other side.”

QND will close out the regular season with a volleyball tournament at Quincy University on Friday, Oct. 24 and Saturday Oct. 25 before it hosts its 1A Regional the following Monday.

“I think we still have lots to work on,” said Breckenkamp. “I still think that we haven’t really reached our peak. We’re still trying to get things figured out and we’re trying to get in the groove of things. Getting the right mentality to play these tough teams.”
