Tuesday is the traditional day off for Cowboys players after a Sunday game, which means the day’s headlines are often dominated by whatever owner Jerry Jones has to say. This week, the now-83-year-old (his birthday was Monday) announced he’d be sticking with embattled defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, he tried to sell the fanbase on the team still being a playoff contender, he teased making a trade before the Nov. 4 deadline to improve the roster, and he explained that the reason he didn’t speak to the media following Sunday’s embarrassing loss was that the media was gathered a “long, long way” from where he was. Ahem.

Eberflus’s job security may ultimately be assured because he was hand-picked by Jones, even before Brian Schottenheimer was on board. That’s what Jones himself suggested in a Tuesday interview. And anyway, there is no obvious heir apparent standing by on the coaching staff… although former Cowboys player and current assistant Darian Thompson has an intriguing pedigree that includes mentorships under some brilliant defensive minds.

Elsewhere, the team waived Jalen Cropper in what is assumed to be a routine bit of housekeeping, as several playmakers are set to return from injury. (Cropper could be back on the practice squad if he clears waivers.) George Pickens is off to a blistering start, but has he been good enough for the Cowboys to view him as more than a one-year rental? Jones allowed for a long-term possibility, but if Dallas loses Week 7’s game to the division rival Commanders, the trade talk (while his value is sky-high) might become deafening.

We look ahead to the Commanders, who are coming off a short week after dropping a heartbreaker on Monday night; they’ll no doubt look to clean up the turnovers that plagued them versus Chicago. Quarterback Jayden Daniels took responsibility for the defeat, but there were other issues at play- like missed tackles and a loudly-doinked field goal try. And as Dallas preps for Washington’s star talents, they would be wise to gameplan for under-the-radar running back Jeremy McNichols, who has become the team’s secret weapon of sorts in key moments.

Across the league, ex-Cowboys coordinator Bill Callahan is now out in Tennessee, just 24 hours after the Titans gave his son Brian the boot as head coach. The Ravens have dropped just-signed safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson in an apparent misunderstanding over playing time, the Browns are now officially on their way out of downtown Cleveland, and seven-time Pro-Bowl center Nick Mangold has made an unusual request of Jets fans and football followers in general: anyone have a kidney to spare?
