NEW YORK — While the Yankees will be without Anthony Volpe on Opening Day after the shortstop had his left shoulder surgically repaired, a far more important member of the team’s lineup avoided the knife.
NEW YORK — With Aaron Boone and Brian Cashman hosting a postmortem press conference at Yankee Stadium on Thursday, the Yankees’ surgically repaired shortstop dominated the conversation.
DETROIT — Guard Jaden Ivey will be out of the Detroit Pistons’ lineup at least four weeks following an arthroscopic procedure on his right knee, the team announced Thursday.
Jonathan Kuminga’s outburst toward a referee in Portland cost him more than just the second half of a preseason basketball game.
Anthony Santander was dropped from the Toronto Blue Jays’ AL Championship Series roster ahead of Game 4 against Seattle because of a back injury, ending his season. An outfielder who turns 31 on Sunday, Santander was replaced by outfielder Joey Loperfido. Santander is eligible to return should the Blue Jays advance to the World Series Santander, a 2024 All-Star, hit a career-low ,175 with six homers and 18 RBIs in 54 games after signing a $92.5 million, five-year contract. He was sidelined between May 29 and Sept. 24 by left shoulder inflammation and hit .200 with two RBIs in five postseason games.
FRISCO, Texas — Cowboys defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus doesn’t say a whole lot in his weekly news conferences. He’ll answer questions, but keeps his responses mostly general. To be fair: It’s not like he could say much that the play of his defense isn’t already telling us.
FRISCO, Texas — Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb wasn’t asked if he will play in Sunday’s game against Washington, but all signs are looking good.
PHILADELPHIA — It’s been over four years since the end of the Carson Wentz era in Philadelphia, which started almost a decade ago when the Eagles paid the high price to move up and draft the North Dakota State product with the second overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft.
The Western Conference is so strong that its championship might feel like the real NBA Finals. BetMGM Sportsbook shows that six of the top seven potential NBA champions from a betting liability standpoint are from the West. Miami is the only Eastern team. Western teams have won three of the last four championships, with Boston in 2024 being the exception. Oklahoma City and Denver are the top favorites at BetMGM. Meanwhile, the MVP race appears to be among Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Nikola Jokic, and Luka Doncic. Dallas’ Cooper Flagg is the favorite for Rookie of the Year.
Had a decent 10-5 straight-up last week and salvaged 7-8 vs. the betting line, but, oh what might have been had we not been upended by those two big upsets Monday night — including the Bears’ miracle late rally at Washington robbing us. Scored a pair of dogs-with-points on covers by the Dolp…
The WNBA says its All-Star Game is returning to Chicago in 2026 and will be played at the United Center. The game will be played on July 25, with the 3-point contest and Skills Challenge taking place the day before. The plans are contingent on the league getting a new collective bargaining agreement in place. The current one expires at the end of the month.
Milwaukee Bucks guard AJ Green has parlayed his increased role into a four-year, $45 million contract extension. ProMondo Sports, the agency that represents Green, announced the deal Thursday in an Instagram post. ESPN first reported the deal. Green is coming off a 2024-25 season in which he averaged 7.4 points, 2.4 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 22.7 minutes in 73 games while shooting 42.7% from 3-point range. His 155 3-point baskets ranked third on the team. He shot 18 of 35 from 3-point range during the Bucks’ five-game loss to the Indiana Pacers in the first round of the playoffs.
No. 1 UConn’s season opener against No. 20 Louisville that is supposed to be played at Ramstein Air Base in Germany on Nov. 4 is in jeopardy of being moved because of the government shutdown. A person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press on Thursday that if the shutdown continues to Monday the game will be played at a neutral site in the U.S. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because no official announcement has been made.
McLaren’s scrap in Singapore has been settled. It’s time to get the drivers back to a chasing a Formula 1 championship. Lando Norris said Thursday that the team determined he bore responsibility and consequences for bumping into bumping into teammate Oscar Piastri at the start of the last race in Singapore two weeks ago. Norris would finish ahead of Piastri and cut his teammate’s championship lead to 22 points with six grand prix left on the season. F1 races this week at United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas.
Chicago defensive coordinator Dennis Allen faces his former team for the first time since he was fired as head coach last season when the Bears host the New Orleans Saints. He insists it’s just “another game.” Allen spent 15 of the past 20 years in New Orleans as either an assistant under Sean Payton or head coach and was part of a Super Bowl championship staff. Allen led New Orleans to an 18-25 record over 2 1/2 years with no playoff appearances before getting fired after Week 9 last season with the Saints 2-7 after losing seven in a row. He was promoted after six seasons as defensive coordinator in 2022 when Payton went into what turned out to be a one-year retirement before taking the Denver job.
Seattle Mariners right-hander Bryce Miller will start Game 5 of the AL Championship Series against the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday while All-Star Bryan Woo will be available out of the bullpen. Miller, 27, went 4-6 with a 5.68 ERA during the regular season, limited to a career-low 18 starts due to a pair of injured list stints caused by right elbow inflammation. He won Sunday’s ALCS opener at Toronto with six innings of one-run ball. Woo was a career-best 15-7 with a 2.94 ERA in 30 starts, leaving his most recent start on Sept. 19 after five innings because of pectoral tightness.

The New York Giants have found new energy with rookies Jaxson Dart and Cam Skattebo. They face the Denver Broncos’ tough defense on Sunday. The Giants have scored touchdowns on their opening drives in all three games Dart has started. Skattebo scored three touchdowns in the Giants’ win over Philadelphia last week. Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph is impressed with the duo’s confidence and playmaking. Dart has been sacked only three times in the last two weeks. The Broncos are honoring their Super Bowl 50 team and the late Demaryius Thomas on Sunday.
Now the Seattle Seahawks have to figure out how to win consistently at home. Seattle is 3-0 on the road this season but 1-2 at Lumen Field, a stadium that not so long ago was one of the team’s prized advantages. The Seahawks host the Texans (2-3) on Monday night, hoping to get some of that Lumen mojo going. The home slump became apparent last season, when the Seahawks went 3-6 at Lumen, their worst record in Seattle since 2008.
ORLANDO, Fla. — If the reports are true — that Florida athletic director Scott Stricklin met with a group of influential boosters on Tuesday, and they demanded change in exchange for continued financial support — then the Gators may be on the verge of making a rash decision that has more to …
HARTFORD, Conn. — The UConn women’s basketball team’s season opener against Louisville, scheduled to be played at the Ramstein Air Base in Germany, could be in jeopardy if the ongoing government shutdown continues into November.
LOS ANGELES — The Dodgers aren’t supposed to be making this look so easy.
Bruce Pearl is joining TNT and CBS Sports as an analyst for college basketball this season. It was announced Thursday Pearl will be part of TNT’s studio team alongside Jalen Rose, Jamal Mashburn, Chris Webber, and Adam Lefkoe. He’ll cover Big East and Big 12 games and also serve as a game and studio analyst for CBS during the regular season. Pearl will then move to the studio for CBS and TNT’s joint coverage of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. Pearl recently retired after leading Auburn to its second Final Four. He expressed excitement about this new chapter in his career.
LOS ANGELES — Victoria’s Secret called game.
LOS ANGELES — “First Take” has a new host.
LAS VEGAS — Carter Hart said he’s “excited to move forward” after signing with the Golden Knights on Thursday, three months after being acquitted of sexual assault.
The Detroit Lions have not lost two straight games in the regular season in nearly three years. Detroit is hosting the NFC South-leading Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday night. Tampa Bay has the best record in the conference and is tied with Indianapolis for the best mark in the NFL entering Week 7. The Lions are coming off a 30-17 loss at Kansas City. They have not dropped two straight games in the regular season since losing five in a row and falling to 1-6 on Oct. 30, 2022.
Here’s a look back at Week 6’s action and fantasy advice for the week ahead:
Bengals All-Pro defensive end Trey Hendrickson has been ruled out for Thursday night’s game against Pittsburgh because of a hip injury. Hendrickson was injured during the first half of last Sunday’s loss at Green Bay. He led the league with 17 1/2 sacks last season and has four in six games this season. Defensive end Shemar Stewart is expected to return after missing four games with an ankle injury. The Bengals have also promoted Isaiah Foskey from the practice squad. Guard Lucas Patrick is back from a calf injury. Pittsburgh safety DeShon Elliott is expected to play.
The Holy War rivalry features a lot of overlap for coaches on both sidelines. When No. 23 Utah plays at No. 15 BYU on Saturday, many coaches on both sides will be facing the teams where they once played or coached. BYU coach Kalani Sitake spent 10 years on Utah coach Kyle Whittingham’s staff. Whittingham has five assistants who played at BYU, including offensive coordinator Jason Beck. BYU has five coaches who worked under Whittingham, including two who also played for him. While the rivalry can create animosity between players and fans, the coaches share none. Many are close off the field, with Whittingham and Sitake often seen together in the offseason playing golf or attending Utah Jazz games.
Los Angeles Times NFL writer Sam Farmer examines the matchups and makes his predictions for Week 7 of the NFL season.
The Baltimore Ravens are hoping they’ll be a completely different team after their bye week with Lamar Jackson back at quarterback and both sides of the ball looking more like they expected at the beginning of the season. The question is whether it’s already too late. A slew of injuries, combined with a tough early schedule, has left the Ravens with a 1-5 record that would have seemed unfathomable a couple months ago. Only four teams since the merger have started 1-5 and still made the playoffs.
Detroit Pistons guard Jaden Ivey had surgery on his right knee and will be out for at least a month, a setback for the fourth-year pro after he broke his left leg last season. Detroit drafted him with the No. 5 pick in 2022 and he is entering the last year of his contract. Ivey had surgery last January and missed the rest of the season. After being cleared without restrictions for training camp, he played in only one preseason game.
Phillies president Dave Dombrowski questions if Bryce Harper can return to his elite form. Harper’s recent performance has been below his usual standards, with his lowest OPS since 2016. Despite this, Dombrowski acknowledges Harper remains an All-Star caliber player. Phillies manager Rob Thomson believes Harper is motivated to have his best season next year. The Phillies face decisions on key free agents, including Kyle Schwarber and J.T. Realmuto. Dombrowski emphasizes the need to maintain perspective despite recent postseason losses. The team aims to improve without drastically changing the roster.
Indiana announces new eight-year contract with football coach Curt Cignetti worth more than $92 million.
Shane Steichen’s journey to becoming head coach of the Indianapolis Colts began in 2011 as a defensive assistant with the Los Angeles Chargers, where he spent nine seasons in total. Steichen still holds plenty of respect within the Chargers’ organization, and that esteem has been apparent ahead of the Colts’ visit on Sunday. Before he was directing the best scoring offense in football for the upstart Colts, Steichen’s first coordinator job came at the culmination of his second stint with the Chargers, working with QB Justin Herbert as a rookie in 2020.
Christian McCaffrey has long been the standard for dual-threat running backs in the NFL. This season, his offseason training partner Bijan Robinson has surpassed him. Robinson is off to a near record-setting start for Atlanta headed into the Falcons game against McCaffrey and the San Francisco 49ers. He leads the NFL with 822 yards, the sixth most ever through five games. Robinson joined Thurman Thomas as the only players with at least 300 yards receiving and 450 yards rushing through five games. He needs 178 yards against the 49ers to become the first player since 2000 to reach 1,000 scrimmage yards through six games.
