On Monday afternoon, the Chargers announced the signing of former South Carolina wide receiver Dalevon Campbell following a tryout during the team’s rookie mini camp. In a corresponding move, the team is waiving offensive lineman Bucky Williams.
Campbell played six collegiate seasons between three different programs. After starting at the University of Illinois (2019-2021), he spent two seasons at Nevada (2022-2023) before finishing his career with the Gamecocks.
The 6’4, 205-pound Campbell was named a Honorable Mention All-Mountain West selection following the 2023 season where he hauled in 31 passes for 594 yards and two touchdowns. This past season with South Carolina, Campbell averaged a robust 26 yards per reception on 12 receptions which he turned into 312 yards.
During his five-year career, Campbell finished with totals of 87 receptions for 1,463 yards and three touchdowns.
Campbell reportedly runs a 40-yard dash in the 4.3s which does match up with the highlights on his film. If Gamecocks LaNorris Sellers was able to hit him in stride a few more times, his touchdown would have been much higher, as well.
With his intangibles, it’s easy to see why the Chargers would take a chance on Campbell. After all, the whole point of changing up the way the team has done rookie mini camp was so Jim Harbaugh and Joe Hortiz could better find those “gems” and it looks like the staff may have found their first.
