CURWENSVILLE — Glendale piled up 267 first-half yards Friday evening at Coach Andy Evanko Stadium, riding a 100-yard rusher and 100-yard receiver to a 27-0 lead over Curwensville at the break.

The Golden Tide stormed back in the second half, but the Vikings got a special teams score to offset the hosts rally and picked up a 34-20 victory in a battle of 2-win teams.

Viking back Tanner Ammerman carried the ball 10 times for 110 yards in the opening half, busting off a 35-yard TD run that made it 14-0 and adding a 44-yard scamper to set up Logan Skebeck’s 1-yard sneak with 1:57 to go in the second quarter.

Cameron Dreibelbis recorded six receptions for 122 yards before the break, finishing off the second quarter with a 13-yard TD catch in the final minute that put the Vikings on top 27-0.

Dreibelbis had receptions of 38 and 21 yards in the first half on two separate drives, but both possessions ended with the Vikings turning the ball over on fumbles.

The teams combined for five turnovers (one on downs) on five straight possessions.

Glendale dented the scoreboard first, going 42 yards in five plays with Skebeck hitting Levi Hamilton for a 28-yard TD pass on third-and-16 with 9:21 to go in the opening stanza.

Dreibelbis set up the field position with a 45-yard return of the opening kickoff.

The next five series ended in turnovers with the most costly one coming on the Tide’s opening possession.

Curwensville marched from its 40 to the Viking 4 where it fumbled the ball away on third-and-3.

Glendale finally ended the turnover streak with a quick four-play, 65-yard drive that ended with Ammerman’s 35-yard score.

The game was stopped for about 20 minutes after Ammerman’s touchdown for an injury to Curwensville’s Noah Pentz, who stumbled twice trying to get up after the play before being helped to the ground by teammate Tuck Tkacik.

Pentz was worked on by the training staff and Curwensville EMS and was carted off the field after being stabilized for precautionary reasons. He was conscious when he left the field and preliminary word was that he was awake and alert, and at the hospital waiting for test results at press time.

Curwensville fumbled away the ball again on its next series and Glendale struck in two plays to take the 21-0 lead before adding one final score after a Tide three-and-out, taking the commanding 27-point edge to the locker room.

But Curwensville scored on the opening drive of the third quarter, going 63 yards in eight plays. Lincoln Hoyt had a 27-yard run in the drive, while Sammy Gustafson added a 23-yard carry.

Dante Lezzer’s 1-yard sneak at 8:36 paid off the drive.

The Tide defense turned Glendale over on downs at the Curwensville 27 on the ensuing possession and the offense traveled 63 yards in 16 plays with Gustafson going the final two with 8:56 left to play in the game.

Mason Lash’s second PAT of the game made the score 27-14.

But any hopes of a Tide comeback were dashed on the kickoff, which Dreibelbis returned 97 yards for a score, building the Viking lead to 34-14.

Curwensville responded with another long scoring drive, needing 13 plays to cover 64 yards. Hoyt scored from five yards out with 2:29 remaining one play after a 24-yard burst.

Hoyt led the Tide rushing attack with 106 yards on 19 carries. Gustafson added 98 yards on 23 totes.

Ammerman finished his night with 129 yards on 15 carries for the Vikings, while quarterback Skebeck hit on nine of his 14 pass attempts for 173 yards and two TDs.

Glendale outgained Curwensville 267-90 in the first half, while piling up 10 first downs to the Tide’s six.

Curwensville had 162 yards of offense in the second half to go with 10 first downs, while Glendale only picked up 33 yards and three first downs after the break.

The Vikings improved to 3-6 on the season with the Tide dropping to 2-7.
