STRASBURG — It was a special night for the Strasburg Rams.
With it being homecoming, it would make the victory a little more sweeter for Strasburg. The Rams defeated the Luray Bulldogs 42-6 in Bull Run District football action on Friday night.
“I thought we answered the bell early, right from the jump,” Strasburg head football coach Tripp Lamb said. “I thought this was going to be a physical game, which it was. I thought we had a good chance, as long as we came out early.”
The Rams played a well-rounded game offensively and defensively. On the offensive side of things, the Rams got whatever they wanted and defensively they didn’t allow a touchdown until the fourth quarter.
“It was really nice, especially defensively,” Lamb said. “I feel like we started the year off a little slow defensively. So it was nice to see us getting back to playing the brand of defense that we used to play, because you have to play good defense if you’re going to do anything in this district. So, it was nice to get back down and settle down on defense, and the offense is really hot right now.”
In the first quarter, both teams would not let the other score. The game was what it was expected to be — a hard nosed, physical battle between both sides. With 48 seconds left to go in the first quarter the Rams would see good field position after a punt return that brought them across the 40.
Then it would only take the Rams two plays to score the touchdown. On a play where Strasburg junior running back Quincy Williams took the ball to the left side and after making a few defenders miss he scored a 39-yard touchdown just before the end of the first quarter.
It wouldn’t stop there for the Rams. It was time for the Rams defense to answer the call. On the Bulldogs next offensive drive, Strasburg senior defensive back/quarterback Brayden Hough saw the ball in the air and took it all the way back for another Rams touchdown. With just over 10 minutes remaining in the second quarter the score was 14-0.
With all the momentum on the Rams side, Strasburg would get the ball before halftime. They had a chance to score just before the half but couldn’t punch it in.
The Rams really opened up the game in the second half. Strasburg would score four more touchdowns. This game was really a track meet and the Bulldogs couldn’t keep up.
The Rams would get the first possession of the second half. With 10:34 left in the third quarter, Williams would catch a pass out of the back field from quarterback Hough wide open in the middle of the field. He would go 47 yards to score a touchdown for the Rams for a 21-0 lead.
The Rams would keep piling it on. On their next offensive drive, Strasburg would drive the ball all the way down to the goal line and score on a 7-yard run by Linkyn Bosworth for a 28-0 lead. At that point, the game was out of reach for the Bulldogs. The Rams would continue to put up more points. The defense would also not allow the Bulldogs to get back into the game.
Next week, the Rams will look to get revenge against the Clark County Eagles in their matchup.
“We’re looking forward to it,” Lamb said. “They beat us last year at their place. They have to come here this year. So we’re going to have a good week of practice and hopefully we can come out with a win.”
